I understand where Magnus was coming from; he was clearly better than Fabi at the faster time control, and given their draws, about evenly matched at the classical section
Magnus and Fabiano Should Finish Game 12

I think it’s just part of strategy. Can’t blame Magnus for trying to win the easiest way he felt he could

But all Magnus had to do was finish this one game, and he had a clear advantage. What if Magnus got a bad night sleep before the rapid and couldn't play as well. A million things could go wrong in the Rapid. The worst that could have happened was White pulling a draw anyway and still go to rapids.
Maybe Magnus had gotten a bad night of sleep before this game and couldn’t focus

I still would like to see them finish this game for fun, even if no prize is involved.
That I agree with. I like how some tournaments are now requiring a game to go beyond move 40 before a draw can be agreed.

Eh, I would make it 50, to match the 50 move rule, if an endgame that theoretically takes more than 50 moves to win with perfect play, can be declared a draw under the 50 move rule, you should have to play at least 50 moves from the beginning before being allowed to agree to just abandon the game!
40,50.... I don’t think there is much difference. Especially since new time control begins at move 40. Either the players are going to agree to a draw at move 40, or they are going to wait until move 50 if you make them

I had to look at the position with an engine myself, and it evaluates it at -0.50 which does not indicate a decisive advantage yet. Black is definitely much better(lots of initiative, better piece coordination) but to me it looks like it might be tough to convert.
But I can understand Carlsen's decision especially after the stress of the previous 11 games.

Me and Mako cat played this out, and although we both made blunders (he was kind enough to let me reverse one so we could play from an equal position again) Black managed to win in one game, and white in the other. This is interesting because we played opposite colors each time, so I am wondering what attacks I played that he could have used, or what moves he didn't make that I made when I was white and vice versa...etc. Some generalizations I can make about this position is that Magnus should have placed his rooks on the b and c files instead of the A file, the common pattern seems to be black has an edge with that extra e pawn, and unless black falls for some fork tactics, it is really hard for white to maintain a draw, let alone win. I am no supercomputer, but I can say white's cramped position is no help to him from the start position, regardless of who is what color. White does have chances if black doesn't start the pressure immediately with attacking moves such as rc8, rb8, b5 ( a move Magnus should have played around move 28) and even na6 ideas, which surprisingly were not discussed in a GM analysis video on youtube. I would love to see Magnus and Fabiano play this out, even each player taking a turn at each side, to see what happens!
Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana should be forced to finish this last game of the world chess championship. In a game with only one pawn and piece missing from each side and Black with a +2 advantage according to the supercomputer, Magnus had no reason to offer a draw! They should both be charged with chess misconduct, and ordered by the court to finish this game once and for all, so we would have known what would have happened if this game continued. Give them 1 hour each with a 5 second delay and force them to play from this position, and whoever wins gets the world champion title, forget the rapid tiebreakers, make the champion earn his title based on finishing this fascinating game!
