I decided to keep my IQ level steady already at the top of the current page - cutting my losses thereby.

I'm disappointed because I thought my pictures would make it clear. It seems no one bothered to look at them though

<Elubas> you are right actually. I now changed my post #25 accordingly - hurry up, you can still save some of your intelligence by quitting (relatively) early.

<Binary> I feel your frustration, but sadly I can't completely empathize... I still felt dragged into the depths of trollish oblivion by this discussion, your lovely pictures notwithstanding.

I don't think the OP understood the rules so assumed it was all gibberish.

I definitely agree it's a very good format for trolling (slowly revealing rules or details as the game progresses) but in the game they stayed consistent until the very end when Carlsen claims mate.

I didn't realize that green jelly actually forms bubbles when confined to small spaces such as the human skull.

No, and thanks for asking - this isn't happening to me. I'm simply blessed with the capability of observing these changes at a distance. Spiritual, you know.

This was done to me once by the way.

I was told we were going to play a variant where each move must be made within a certain maximum time. If you take longer than that time for any move, you lose.

And that's it. Play starts now.

After a few moves, my opponent declared I had lost on time. I said this was too silly, but he explained the trick: as long as I didn't take longer than the longest time taken by my opponent, then my opponent can't forfeit me on time

"hurry up, you can still save some of your intelligence by quitting (relatively) early. "

I've made over 10,000 posts just like these ones. Do you really think it's not too late by now? :)

Anyway binary... maybe Magnus means that all pieces change every full move? So when Magnus played Nf3, it was a knight, when black played ...Nf6, it was a knight, but after the full move black and white's knight simultaneously change into a bishop?

So then white's bishop could play Bxb7, and black's knight on c8 will not become a bishop again until the full move 2 is completed.

After Bxb7, black's bishop is still a bishop because it's still move 2 and it's been a bishop since move 2. So 2...Bxb2, now on move 3 white's bishop has become a knight so he takes the queen, same for black's bishop. Then on move 4, white's knight has become a bishop, so he takes on c7. But by the end of move 4, the bishop will be a knight.

Before move 4 is over, the c7 piece is a bishop. But black knows that it will become a knight at the end of move 4, after black moves. But he can't get out of it with ...Kd8 since before move 5, the piece on c7 is still a bishop. (And if I'm counting correctly, the piece on b8 is a knight, and will only become a bishop on move 5, which is too late.)

That should work. But is that what Magnus said at the start? When he does the Nc3 example, he says it becomes a bishop, but then later on he says "if I move, it'll become a bishop again next move." But he doesn't seem to tell you whether it became a bishop after white's move, or after black's move.

Elubas

Or is the piece on b8 a bishop? If white's knight changed from its original state to a bishop, black's piece on b8, initially a knight, must have done the same if they change simultaneously. Damn, Magnus, I'm trying to help you out but you're making it tough :)

If I understand you, you're essentially saying all the minor pieces change at the end of black's moves.

I agree this interpretation works, but the end position is unchanged I think.

In the video Carlsen claims the game is over after white's 4th move. Therefore black has made 3 moves. Because this is an odd number, all minors must have their opposite value. So the piece on b8 can capture like a bishop even under these rules.

Elubas

Yeah it doesn't seem to work. But so close! Maybe there is some other weird interpretation of the rules that works, but I dunno, if there is, it's on Magnus for making it so unclear :)

Elubas

Would have been so beautiful if it worked. Now it's more like a Tal sac that no one could refute at the time :)

Yeah, that would be interesting. Part of me hopes I missed something.

Elubas

And even without the ...Bxc7 problem, arguably black could play ...Kd8, reasoning that it doesn't matter that white controls c7 now since next move the piece will be a knight, so the king didn't "really" move into check as it will never truly be en prise for white. Kind of like the reasoning I was using earlier.

So there's probably more than one issue here :)

Maybe if Carlsen had explained in his 1st language he would have done a better job.

Elubas #48 - sincerely, you made me laugh with this one!! :-)

Confusion and more confusion.

Staying on this thread and going deeper into this causes an IQ decrease in the long term - 20 points per page, I suspect.

Finally (at page six perhaps?) the brain turns into light-green jelly and slowly exits the skull through the ears and nostrils.

Marco is staying remarkable silent... and is laughing all the way to the bank.

hahah, I am laughing, but specially on the happy face of Magnus at the end of that video.

Note he is SOOOOOOOO satisfied on his trolling job.

well i think a lot of sports is about trolling your opponent

In fact it is, good point.

For exemple, soccer: every people loves the drible.

What is a drible? It is an ability of a player to troll the opponent in order to go further and make the goal.

Maybe Carlsen is doing propaganda for the match with Karjakin.

You mean Magnus is going to troll Karjakin as he did in the video?

DoctorStrange

Nice post!

Thanks Marco :)
