I signed up at G-star a few days ago.. they said they would be sending some info.. but nothing in my gmail inbox yet... hmmm
Magnus vs World predictions?
It is NOT always about the money.
Case and point: Sultan Khan
http://www.chess.com/article/view/the-forgotten-genius-and-his-strange-openings
He was no small fry either:
"According to Chessmetrics web site, Sultan Khan was number six in the World behind Alekhine, Kashdan, Flohr, Capablanca, and Euwe, but ahead of Nimzowitsch and Rubinstein. His peak rating was 2699!"
Who cares about this. Either way he wins. If he wins game he looks great. If he loses game he can say he was up against many players. No matter what this is going to put money in his pocket and other.
---------------------------------------------------------------
It is all about money. Never heard of the past good players doing any of this nonsense. Sounds like Don King is in the area or behind this. No what they say about big ego's, somebody is right around the corner to knock you off your hi horse.
.
1.I would say the majority of chess fans care, it is a special thing to be apart of a match with a #1.
2.Kasparov did it, as did other top players from the last decades. one could speculate if the tech. was around many WC would have loved to give this a go.
3.who cares if he gets paid? these GMs are brilliant enough to be very successful in other intellectual fields that pay much, much, more. why not let the guy get some cash for it? his brain, his event, his money.
People seem to be misunderstanding the format of this upcoming match.
1. Carlsen makes a move for white
2. Three GMs suggest a move for black
3. World participants choose between the three proposed moves and vote
4. Move with the most votes is the move for black
5. Repeat
Now back to the original post challenge:
1. Who will win?
2. How many moves will be made before the match ends?
3. What opening will be played?
4. Among the 3 GMs, whose moves will the World vote for most of the time?
EDIT: Just think of this as a football final score and MVP bet.
Unless the next move for black is forced or is clearly winning, I think that the suggestions of the 3 GMs will differ most of the time.

Why so cynical? It's giving Chess a boost on the world stage - which is better than a lot of other sports riddled with match-fixing, money, corruption, etc...
And the fact that we, the "average Joe" chess players, can be a part of it, I think is great.

Never in the past has there been the technology for doing such a thing, until such matches came up as described in
http://www.chess.com/article/view/the-world-verse
Now there is even a new "first": Never has it been possible to play such a match at such a rapid time control. Chess.com are the first to make that possible!
Looking forward to an exciting game :-)
Won't we be allowed to vote another move? What if the GMs miss the best move, maybe even the best one? I wouldn't like to see that
"3. World participants choose between the three proposed moves and vote"
That should be a ridiculous setup to start with.

Versus what? Giving the World the chance to place moves suggested by the latest chess engines running optimally on 64-core computers?
Magnus plays 1. e4
HN suggests 1. ... c5 because he rulez
MVL suggests 1. ... e6 because he's French
JP suggests 1. ... e5
OK voting closes after 90(?) seconds and a minute later MC's 1. ... e6 2. d4 comes in
Now suddenly both HN and JP can drop their prepared lines. Voting continues...
MVL suggests 2. ... d5
HN still suggests 2. ... c5
JP suggests 2. ... e5
Voting closes and now the Hikaru fanboys have gathered themselves and the world is playing some wicked kind of opening system 1. e4 e6 2. d4 c5 3. d5
MC might even play something like 1. Nc3 just to cause major confusion in the newbie heads and it's even more of a gamble if the World is going to play a coherent opening :p

OK, so after making a quick check with info governing this match, it seems that this "World vs" match will be far different from all others.
1. One minute to think plus 90 seconds to vote. This is as close to live as you can get. No 3-month game here...the game will be done within 3-4 hours. This also means no time to discuss anything in the forum.
2. The three GMs to advise the World Team are all top notch, and they have all played Magnus previously.
So if I read the format correctly, Magnus will play, and the GMs will indicate their individual recommended play...and the World will then choose one of these or another move.
I predict that the match turns out to be Magnus vs The Three GMs...with all moves on the World side being chosen from the recommendations made.
...this will be quite interesting indeed.
I still say Magnus wins....can't wait for the 10th...
