My son just turned 5 last month. He started playing chess last December and was very passionate about it. The chess coach in his club and his headmaster all thought he's very talent in chess. We took him to two tournament recently, one minor event and one major event. He all got great achievement and he really enjoyed playing in the tournament. He's not graded yet, but looking at his opponent, we think he's roughly 1000 - 1200.

In the major event, we met a 6 years old boy. He's a genius - has the rating around 1500 and was selected to represent the country. I was quite curious about the boy's learning journey and did a research. I found out the boy played nearly 240 tournaments per year!! It made me to think shall I make my son to attend as much tournament as possible? Really appreciate for any advice!

The most important thing to consider is this: How many tournaments does your son want to pay in? I assume that your son's happiness is your primary goal, isn't it? In that case, you should definitely encourage his interest in chess, and even give him a little push, but if it turns out that he doesn't want to play in 200+ tournaments a year and devote his entire childhood to chess, so be it!

Firstly thanks for your comment. Yes, we would like him to enjoy it and treat it as one of his hobby. So far he's only attended 2 tournaments, we have not idea about his 'limit'. What is average number of tournaments kids usually play every year?

In Central New Jersey, where I live, there are tournaments for kids every weekend. And Some kids do play every week. You will have to feel your way on this issue until you figure out how often your boy enjoys competing. 240 tournaments, or even 240 rated games a year seems like an awful lot. I'm sure you will do a good job of ensuring your son's happiness
