I seem to remember that Murray's book on Chess in Iceland noted that the pawn was considered to be the most ignominous mate!
Since then I've always enjoyed composing problems that end in a surprise pawn mate.

I just remembered something from the days I used to play chess back in high-school. There was this one kid who insisted on mating his opponent with a pawn, to 'humiliate' him ;).
I don't know about you, but it seems like a perfect way to finish off those opponents who refuse to give up a clearly lost game. At least it would make it more interesting for the winning side.
