Why not? There are some real benefits, like winning arena tournaments, easy progression in leagues, etc. And as far as I can tell, there are no repercussions.

Well, that's one solution. I guess the site gets more of what they encourage, lol.

They do eventually ban you for it... I think you get a lot of warning first though (based on how some people don't get banned even after I report them...)

There are sophisticated ways of sandbagging that can't really be detected easily but require a lot of work to maintain. You just have an account and play to a long-term lower average, and just unleash your true power when it's important. Like I said, it takes work to maintain, more than anyone sensible really has time for, but there are lots of people on here that aren't sensible.

Sandbagging is considered cheating and will result in an account closure if you're found guilty.

I notice when I play daily games I come across a lot of 1700/1800 players, and I'm like "ok pretty decent player".  Then I look at their game history and they're beating just a bunch of 1100s.  Now I'm not saying people are intentionally playing much lower rated players, and I also know it's not quite the same as sandbagging, but I think a lot of players don't bother to set their filters.  This discussion just got me thinking about how, as a whole, ratings can be very deceiving.  I set my filters on the lower end to minus 50 because I feel like it's better for my own growth as a player.  I would rather lose to someone who is a stronger player than me than just beat up on weaker players for the sake of bumping up my rating.

In theory, playing a bunch of weaker players won't help your rating. You'll win almost all or your games, but when you win, you'll only get a pittance of an elo boost; But when you lose the occasional game to a weaker player, your rating will take a huge hit. So it's all a wash, ratings-wise. The only advantage is you win most of your games, so that's a benefit if you need wins to boost your ego.

I completely understand what you're saying but you can still boost your rating that way.  If you have 10 wins for every 1 loss, even though the loss may be a big drop, you're still going to gradually increase your rating.
