Mcconnells defense

So I'm super duper uber new. Let's just get that outta the way.

I'm playing a 1200 (I'm a 400 I think) and when I e4 they meet with e5 as expected and so I nf3. MY issue is that the comp ALWAYS goes Qf6. Now, I was stoked when I learned how to break the MCconnell defense and so I went nc3 and was met with nc6 and then I went nd5, threatening the queen. The part I don't get about what I'm doing wrong is that their nc6 move obliterated my ability to do the different variations of the Mcconnell defense because I can't Bg5 because there's no point and I can't take on c7 because ill lose my knight by the Queen. What the heck am I doing wrong. This bot seems to be better than the masters I watch that are teaching me to beat the mcconnell. They say that after I nf3 they will c6 but they NEVER do it. The bot just keeps going nc6.

Your problem is you’re expecting certain moves… you have to be prepared for any and every move - not just one specific defense.

Yeah I hear ya. But I thought I was supposed to learn strategic movement and memorize the openings? Is that not a good way to start? And I figured I'd learn to counter the mcconnell because this bot literally won't stop playing it and he beats me every single time.
