Men's/Women's chess--why?

I'd like to see some of you yayhoos tell Grandmasters Judit Pulgar or Alexandra Kosteniuk or IM Irina Krush that they don't have  anaylatical minds. Women play just as well as men when they chose to dedicate themselves to the game. However, most women have enough common sense (a female trait?) not to waste their time enslaved to a game.  I'm appalled at the level chauvinism shown on this post. I suspect a lot of the writers believe women cannot be doctors or lawyers or or police officers either --or president.

The female brain is PHYSICALLY different to the male brain.

Apparently school was a wast of time for you. Don't bother posting if you're not going to contribute anything.

As for the brains being wired differently, that may be true but I think any amount of dedication completely overshadows that.

What is all this nonsense about women's brains and men's brains. These are just generalities. 'Women generally live longer than men; can multi-task better, better at nurturing, etc, etc.'  We really have to be careful about general statements, as they are often proved not to apply in certain circumstances. The more I learn about men and women, the more I question some of these general assumptions.  Just as we have now had to face the fact that some of the old assumptions about, for example, race is now stuff and nonsense!

I really don't believe the differences between the male and female brain are enough to warrant separate competitions for each gender. Say you have two basketball players, one 6 feet tall, and one 6'1. Either one could beat the other, even though the taller one has the advantage, it really doesn't matter much. Different 'brain types' are even less important. It's logical to have seperate competitions for physical sports, but with chess, it matters little.

As for why there are so few female chess players, I'd say it is simply because most sports are dominated by men. Yes, there are women who have distinguished themselves, but it is men who receive most of the publicity. I feel that this is misogyny not directed toward just chess players or other competitors, but rather a general attitude toward women.

And by the way, my chess teacher is a woman.

Both genders possess quote Masucline and feminine qualities ..we are both logical and emotional...it's in what ratio shining through what body...written by a female crappy new chess player that's going to eventually kick your ass:)

It was started 5 years ago, but apparently people in general don't care about the topic, considering that the thread now has 2 pages of comments over 5 years.

Batgirl, yes, these threads bring out some of the best intelligent, analytical debates.

It is rather simple; the western world has been patriarchal for thousands of years. So it takes an exceptional woman to break into "men's" tournaments or go to a "smoky club" for practice. Feminists (of all genders) have been trying for decades to turn this dynamic around, with only limited success. For now, the world is losing the possibility to study nearly half the creativity and intelligence available. The answer is not of course matriarchy, but the partnership model implying equality. In the best of all worlds it will be a non-issue.

Some men would feel embarrased and threatened  if a woman won the championship in the same league. That is why it will never happen.

Avatar of SMoore1968

If not now, it will happen...I know of a good deal of women chess players

...I have been playing for years...gave it up because I was bored...saw this site 2 years ago...haven't left since...Some women learn from this site and play ad good as ANYBODY.

Because the Patriarchy boogey men keep them out.  Oooh, that reminds me, I still have to attend an Organization of Patriarchal Boogey Men meeting one of these days.

So are women's chess tournaments are small ponds containing medium-sized fish?

Avatar of JHPinto

Totally agree with the OP, can't understand it either.
What strikes me as odd it the fact that women accept to be put in a separate category, thing that for me equals to them
accepting that men are mentally superior. So much for the feminist cause...

You've revived a well beaten horse.

The reason is that the pool of women players is much smaller. So it is much more difficult to find women who can compete at the higher ratings.

It's sorta like this: Suppose you were to choose footballers from 2 places. One place is a bigcity and the other a small town. On average, you would find more strong players from the big city than the small town.

Has nothing to do with general ability or feminism.

Lee. Thailand has a larger population than Madrid. But Madrid has excellent footballers whereas Thailand has very few good ones.

Now don't say depends.

Avatar of kleelof

Of course. Spain has a much longer history with football an a much better system for developing players. On top of that Thais are hot dogers.
