I like the feel of wood.
I don't like the feel of metal.
Yeah, that is the issue.
I had a small metal set and it was never really used because of that.
Wood is usually warm to the touch.
There's nothing better than the look of a nice wooden set. Not to say that metal sets can't look nice, but I think wood speaks to the history of chess.
If you've ever played with a metal set you will notice that the pieces just don't feel quite right in your hand. There is just something about the feel of wood that makes the other materials (glass, stone, metal) feel strange by comparison. For display of course any material will do, but if you're going to actually use the pieces, I don't think wood can be beaten. I'm sure it's subjective, but wood feels warm and inviting, the other materials not so much.
Hey guys, what's your opinion of metal sets? I designed my own chess set, and I'm looking for a shop to prototype it. Most places CNC metal, but very few CNC wood.
But I've been thinking about it... For my own personal use, wouldn't metal be a step up from wood? Could a big metal set possibly be nicer? It's got more heft. It's more durable. The metalic look is entirely subjective, based on taste...
I'm wondering why I don't see more collectors buying metal sets. We hardly make anything out of wood anymore; except furniture. But even a lot of that is leather, cloth, plastic, or metal... no longer wood. Just curious what your opinions are on this.
