Midgame repetition etiquette question

Is repetition ever rude?

"Etiquette", "cowardice" are all irrelevant when we talk about chess moves. You just play your best move. And if it leads to repetition and draw in otherwise inferior position that's what you have to do.

If I were your opponent I'd be rather angry at myself for letting a draw to happen.

Good point on the psychology of repetition, Estragon. Thanks guys.

If you play over master games you will often see repot ions for the reasons Estragon states -- making time control is probably the most common.

SomeDayKing

Yeah, I'm still pretty novice, so I didn't think of repetition as a useful tool at midgame.

SomeDayKing

It seemed especially awkward, because we are playing across time zones, so a single repetition took 3 days.

Very good Estragon.  Sometimes against weaker players in club play I will repeat twice if they have no better move just to throw them off (if I know it has a chance to).  Even if I already know what I want my next non-repetition move will be.

In blitz, planned 2 move repetitions can gain you a few seconds when their moves are forced.  The weaker the player, the more time you gain :p

This can also be used against stronger players who are clearly playing for a win, sometimes with psychological affect.

its completely legit.
