You mean... Just like the Candidates, the World Cup, and other top tournaments ?

I am not sure how can they cover games of hundred boards in Candidates or US Champs style. But I guess they rotate over the boards with cameras?Or may be only the bounty hunter boards will be covered? We will definitely know more as the days close in...

You cannot possibly claim that this is MC-specific.

Listen, this tournament, working or failing, is not of a different kind than the previous ones. It is just a big tournament with more money and currently a registration problem. There is nothing mythical about it.

That in itself sounds mythical to me in the current world of chess! But yes, logically you are correct. The technolgy must already exist for MC to use it. But there may be a few surprises on top of what we have today as some MIT research works may be involved in some other aspects of the tournament. May be may be....

Unless you are one of the world's top 10 talented hackers, be sure you are going to get caught instantly. And if you indeed are oen of the top 10, you could use your time by joining a software company is USA and will earn half a million dollar a year on salary and bonus! Just to give you some idea, how difficult it is to be one of the top 10!

Frankly, you begged for it :

It depends on whether you want to see the glass half full or half empty. As a chess player I would like to ask or demand for things where I have scope. This is like giving some ideas, some hints so that the organizers can have a wide list of options to choose from or work for. There should be nothing wrong with that. You on the other hand, prefer simply going to choose from what offer is available in the market - not spending time or engergy to make changes on the current status. There is nothing wrong with your approach either. Because the glass is both half full and half empty.

NUMBERS DON'T LIE - Look at the payout for one of the largest chess tournament in US now, Chicago Open that just finished 2 days earlier - http://www.chicagoopen.net

The 1st and 2nd place made $7500 (compare to MC's payout is $100K & $50K).

The 3rd to 8th place only made $1066 for 5 days of playing minus food and hotel.

9th and 10th place got $266 minus food and hotel.  Imagine working 5 days for avr of 6 hours a day = 30 hrs and going home with $266??

Under 2500 prize - 1st place is $2000 (while MC is $40,000).  3 people tied for 2nd and each walk out with $333 each (MC would $20,000 & $10,000 $5000 since we don't have ties).

Their entry from $235 to $250 while MC is 4 times more but look at the difference in payout ratio?  100K compare to $7500!

Your hyperbole on every aspect of all this is pretty funny.  You don't have to be even a "good" hacker to make this work.  Any developer that knows the same language a decent open source chess engine is written in plus the basics of mobile apps could do it.  Oh yes, and you need to buy a shoe with a thick sole and cut a hole in it.

Ivanov was not a "top 10 in the world" hacker.  He was a chump that was too stupid to just modify his cheating method to not always use the T1 move (i.e. top result).  If he had done that, he might never have been detected.

There are tens of thousands of people with the skills to do this if they wanted to take the time to set it all up and then train themselves to work their smartphone with their toes.

Indeed, because they do not talk by themselves.

The whole payout thing has been analysed to death on page 23 of this thread. You were around at that time, so unless you have seriously faulty memory, you should remember it.

I do not understand why you keep trying to push the tournament. Many have said it is not a good idea, you arent going to change our minds by providing moot points or points that have already been brought up. The more you post the more it seems like you are trying to convince yourself that you spending money on this thing was a good idea.

"vizio23" posted the same exact post of "numbers don't lie" etc. here : http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/ashleys-million-dollar-chess-tourney---but-bring-your-own-clocks?page=20

Looks more and more like a pathetic attempt from the fanboys (or even the organizers).

Could be a worthwhile risk. Entry fee to up the potential payout, their time is worth money after all.

Whether the tournament is sensible or not to enter depends completely on how many choose to. That's why I don't really think a fixed payout structure works.

Avatar of SocialPanda

Still 91 registered players, but maybe they are not updating immediatly and are just waiting for a new bunch of people to register to publish a new list.

This is probably the crux. The difference between chess and poker is (to me) that there are enough fish around who think they'll get lucky, that its worth the pro's time in tournament play. Given chess doesn't have the same chance element, its going to be harder to get a load of 2100s or 2300s to pony up the money. I like playing really strong players, and I can do that without needing to pay 1k, if I do well in the first couple of rounds of a big open. But I'm not putting up a grand to give that money away to someone else. (Though I'm 2160 USCF, and maybe a little stronger, so the U-2200 might be worth a punt :) )

Chess needs serious help in finding sponsors.  Spelling Bees pay more:

A medal from the Scripps National Spelling Bee

  • Cash prizes:*
    • Misspell in the first round of the Championship Finals to 7th place: $1,500
    • 6th Place: $2,000
    • 5th Place: $2,500
    • 4th Place: $3,000
    • 3rd Place: $7,500
    • 2nd Place: $12,500
    • 1st: $30,000
