Hello Mike,
I believe that I have a picture of Mark Surgies from the early 80s and may have some old Badger Chess and Wisconsin Chess News magazines that could have some games or images.
Nothing before 1970s though.
Hello Mike,

Hi,
I have access to the Wisconsin Chess News and to Badger Chess at the Milwaukee library. I have seen pictures of Mark Surgies in the ACF Yearbook and the Milwaukee newspapers in the 1930s. (I actually played Surgies in a Milwaukee regional about 1970.). I was hoping to find family photos. Is that what you have?
If you want to see something cool, check out the WTMJ TV news archives through the UWM Archives. Search for chess. There are several news stories re chess from the early 1950s. One is from the 1951 Wisconsin state championship. Although there is no sound, you may be able to recognize Mark Surgies, Arpad Elo, Marshall Rohland, Enos Wicher, Richard Kujoth, and others.
Hi.
i am interested in games and photos of Milwaukee chessplayers pre-1950. I am thinking of people like Mark Surgies, O. M. Wehrley, Erwin Teplinsky, Averill Powers, Carl Eppert, Carl Heden, and the like.
Why? I am thinking of a writing project on this topic. I have scoured the local papers and the national chess magazines, so I already have what is available from those sources.
Does anyone have a grandparent or grand-uncle who played chess in Milwaukee from 1920-1950 who has old photo albums or game scores? I think it would be a neat project to combine publicly available info with personal material.
Thanks.
