Wait, if I were the best chess player in the world, would that get me my FM title?

Since you're beatings, I would imagine so.

Definitely. Just ask Borislav Ivanov.

There isn't a language.com. G-night.

You might be flying over, and somebody shoots you down.

I'd instantly take the major languages. English has done wonders to my knowledge and skills, so having more languages than just English and German would boost everything further. But what are the major languages? To me, the list would be: Arabic, Chinese,  English, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portugese, Russian, Spanish, and then some ( :

And I would definitely not invest my time being a translator. Being able to speak in somebody elses language is a sign of respect. I'd use it to build relations.

There's a good chance that being the best at chess (or anything?) would make you lose interest in the game.

Example: Bobby Fischer quote

Best chess player is better

Oh pfft - that was just Bobby trying to justify the fact that he quit chess instead of defending his title. Lame excuses. He also tried to force everyone to say that his farce match with Spassky in '92 was an actual world title match even though Spassky was ranked something like #100 in the world.

Edit: Oh yeah, plus he said that ALL of the Kasparov title matches were fixed.

Yes, but the real question is, is there a howtogetajoke.com?

ivandh

They are discussing the plausibility of a site called chess.com.

Interesting question, but its difficult to seperate without taking into account the person's financial conditon.  Speaking all the major languages and living in a one room apartment holds no interest, but if I had the money to travel everywhere then I'd take the languages.

Boko-maru

Just being forced to listen to the people who speak my language is enough to make me want to take a header off a bridge.  I can't imagine having to listen to everybody.  The horruh.

Only if it was no longer a challenge, and he never solved chess.

Natalia_Pogonina

Being able to speak all the major languages doesn't offer any serious benefits. Ok, you can travel more conveniently and get to understand people of different cultures somewhat better. That's it. Obviously, "be the greatest chess player in the world".
