money or trophy

But there are some IRL tournaments that gives money and trophy. :D

I'd rather have a trophy because I think the entry fee would be less. I've won money in only two tournaments and neither amount covered the entry cost of the tournament. I won one trophy in a different tournament and the entry cost for that tournament was minimal.

If I were a great player and expected to finish first or second in my class, I'd probably want the money. But since I don't finish that high, I'd rather pay a lower fee to enter the tournament and have a shot at a trophy instead

BTW, Natalia's photo is most impressive:)

I won a 1.5 foot trophy as well as a 1 year USCF membership in a tournament. I would have payed the 35 $ for the membership, but I would sell the trophy for 10 bucks

Who'd buy a chess trophy? I wouldn't even take one for free lol

money, that said the most ive ever won is $200, though hopefully as I play more regularly i might get some more.

The higher the cash prizes, the higher the entry fees. I played in a tournament about eight years ago where the entry fee was $370, but the prize for first place in my section was $15,000. I think I finished in the mid-30s out of around 120 in my section - out of the money.

I'd much rather pay an entry fee of $25 and get a trophy if I finish in the top 3. I go to tournaments because I like playing OTB, not cause I have a chance to win money (because I rarely do lol)

Fear_ItseIf

would be tempting to go after that. what ection did you play in? and which tournament? just interested because I never see tournaments with that type of money.

That was the World Open in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (U.S.) I only played in it once. More info on it can be found at chesstour.com

Most tournaments I play in now have an entry fee of $100 to $200, but that's only because the cash prizes are high. I need to find tourneys with no cash prizes and minimal entry fees, but almost all the tournaments like that (which are near me) are blitz tournaments.

The World Open is usually played in July, but I think the organizers recently moved it from Philadelphia to Virginia

I think I was in the u1400 back then; now I'm in the u1600

I suppose it depends on your situation. Some people can use the bit of money that they win and prefer that. Some people win trophies regularly and the value diminishes for them. The only thing that I have to say is that organizers could become a lot more creative with trophies. To much cheap rubbish that could be replaced by something original like a small piece of art, a painting, etc.. Dont buy those cheapo cups !

in a tournament a watch store sponsored a watch for all chess groups. (the one that owns the store was also playing chess himself)

so everyone could win a wristwatch with the tournament engraved on the back of the watch. it made everyone work hard to win. I think people declined more draws in that tourmanet in order to win a watch. The watch were expensive. at least more expensive I guess at least 200 euro.

I will just choose money if I'm already the World Chess Champion with many trophies. :D

It would be cool if chess had a ring like the super bowl ring. A ring every chess player dreams to get.
