I've played people who use it.
Basically its one part personal organzer, one part game storage device, and one part wireless transmitter. You record the moves for both the players and they are sent wirelessly to a central computer with the monroi wireless reciever. The moves for all the games in the tournament that are using the monroi device are sent to the monroi tournament website for viewing and kibitzing. One problem I've encountered is that the wireless signal in the central computer takes awhile to reset and is very finicky...so sometimes you have to wait a couple of minutes after the round starts for them to finish setting it up.
I guess they're getting more and more popular, and I see a lot of kids using them so their parents can view their game from the skittles room.
Just seen the webpage of the product, did not know about this and seems pretty interesting. But at 359 dollars it s expensive.

What is the price of an electronic chess board? The one that connects to computer and records the moves...
359$ .. for a pencil and paper...

What's this about the company owning the games that are transmitted through these devices?

I considered getting one but was put off by the price - I mailed them & they came back with this (below) - a nice reply but it's too expensive. A few people replied to my thread about it (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/hand-held-chess-player) - mainly criticising the price - but it still looked useful to me:

Dear Chris,
Thank you very much for yor email and your interest in MonRoi products. You
could load the games in PGN format from the PCM to your computer
through the SD card. Also, you could load the games from your computer to the Sd card and view them on your PCM. SD card is included in the PCM package. The USB cable is used for charging. UK power adapter is included in the package. The cost of the PCM is 359 USD (about 175 GBP). At the moment we don't have the suppliers in UK. You could purchase the Personal Chess Manager Online at
http://www.monroi.com/reserveonline/order.php. You should include 90 USD for

Reb,
Forget about it man! This is just another electronic geegaw that nobody really needs – like no one really needs a microwave or an electronic can opener or a second car. More crap for the landfill. Take the three hundred bucks and take Mandy out to dinner at a high end restaurant. Have a good bottle of merlot with your dinner then take in a Clint Eastwood movie, and you'll still have enough left over for a good novel, a good chess book, and a nice ball pen to record your moves.
Best Regards,
Rob
Lol ! Rob, its amazing how much we think alike! I have decided against it for various reasons but the biggest being the price. I think your idea of how to spend the money is a good one and perhaps we think alike because we are of the same generation? I dont mind to write my moves down and in fact, if I didnt have to the tournament experience wouldnt be the same. Many of the "advances" in technology cause us to lose certain skills/abilities imo and arent always so "good". An example I have seen are the calculators that so many are so reliant on now that they cannot do simple math problems in their head anymore. Another "infernal contraption" as far as I am concerned is the modern dishwasher. It does NOT clean very well so I still prefer dishes to be washed by hand and often do so myself! My wife explains that you must "rinse them off well first" before placing them in a dish washer. Hell, if you gotta rinse them off well first why not just wash em?!

You certainly have a point here. When I was a kid growing up parents had to threaten their kids to get them to come inside, especially when the weather was nice outside. Today it seems to be the exact opposite and parents almost have to make their kids go outside. The result is that more kids today have an obesity problem than when I was a kid and also , as you point out, their social skills suffer. Too many hours in front of the TV,Computer,Ipod,Nintendo......take your pick.

I don't agree... on the "tree hundred bucks" part :)
It's more like 359$ + 90$ for shipping (Reb is in Portugal) .. it makes 450$
as I sayd.. for a pen and paper... no thanks!

If you Google about any high-tech company out there- someone, somewhere wrote that they are evil. It may be just competition, or speculations based on fear of new technologies, resistance to change or some freaks for all I know.

You certainly have a point here. When I was a kid growing up parents had to threaten their kids to get them to come inside, especially when the weather was nice outside. I know there are lots of people who feel that way, but obesity is not something that's "caused" by spending too much time in front of the TV or computer. Nor is it a simple matter of bad diet and lack of exercise. My son spends hours each day playing computer games or watching TV, yet he is an honor roll student, plays in 4 school sports, very outgoing, and is very skinny-to-muscular. My wife on the other hand, has battled obesity her whole life, eating only healthy food, plodding through countless hours of exercise, only to have no results, and eventually needing gastric bypass to have any effect at all. It's clear that metabolism is something that we don't fully understand yet.
In general, we might be able to say that caloric intake should be offset by activity, but it's not totally clear that the equation is a balanced one. Respiration is tricky - even the air we breathe has weight. Throw in genetic make-up, and you begin to understand why scientists aren't 100% sure why some people are fat and others are skinny.
As far as these hand-held devices go, expect to see more, and better devices in the future, eventually leading up to the possibility of implanted devices and "person-to-net" direct interface. I tend to see the implementation of technology as something that will liberate humanity (and get the kids "out from in front of the TV"), rather than a bad thing. I know I'm not alone on this point - you only need to see the current generation of tech-savvy, socially responsible (yet not all are, I understand that) young adults, texting each other by cell phone, yet constantly on the go, to see that our children's children will have an entirely different view of communication and what it means to be active than what we had. They will leave us old-timers in the dust.
A nice alternative to the device mentioned might be a Nintendo DS with Chessmaster or similar program installed. There might also be some nice PDA or Palmtop software out there. Either way, there are better choices than the buggy, expensive, non-upgradable gadget mentioned.
Does anyone here use this device? I would like to hear from users the pros and cons of this device as I am considering purchasing one and its not cheap.
