Most Dreaded Traps,Tactics, etc to fall into !

So What are the Traps,Tactics,Combinations, etc, etc ... that u hate to fall into/get caught in (other than that inescapable Final Checkmate ie) ?

Mine has always been :

1)the Knight Fork on my Queen and King n there's clearly no way of taking that Irritating,Merciless Knight .. resulting in utter feelings of helplessness/despair/gloom .. there's juz nothing one can do but to move the King n loose one's Queen simultaneously !!! ( but good thing ,nowadays I don't fall into this so much anymore cuz I've learnt to prevent this from happening .. It's soooo Nice when u get to do it on yr Opponent tho, hehe !Tongue out )

2)when one has a clearly Winning Position in the End Game (whether with quite a number of or only a few pieces left against one's  opponent's King n a few of his other pieces) ... but then gets a 'Stalemate' instead of a 'Win by Checkmate',probably  due to lack of precise calculation ! ....... I keep falling into this lately ( whilst playing with the Computers on Live),n got pretty mad with myself ... like one time I tried to be funny n wanted to get a third Queen (Pawn Promotion) cuz he only got his sole king left while I had Queens,Rook n Pawns n had taken all his pawns .. then before I cld get it ,the game was drawn by Stalemate !!! .. guess my lesson is not to fool/wait around too long but to checkmate my opponent in the shortest ,fastest way possible !

You last sentence is absolutely right !!!

One day I was playing a friendly game against a friend that I was absolutely owning Rooks, Queen, etc and instead of checkmating him I went to 5 Queens and still avoided stalemate..then decided to checkmate him

for me in chess games, we need to do checkmate earlier than u enjoy make funny to  opponent even the winning side so close to you.

Yes, to your 1), I hate the Fried-Liver Attack! Not until I started using it as my opening... :)

But not anymore not, you can simply stop it with Be7 or h6.

I hate when I have a completely winning King and Pawn endgame and either miscalculate or get careless, allow my opponent to move one of his pawns, and suddenly I'm losing because I didn't realize the potential of his pawns. For example, I failed to move my King into the "square of the pawn." That's probably the worst feeling of all, in my opinion, especially when it's a tactic I would have seen perfectly clearly if only I had expended a little more effort.

Yeah .. King n Pawn End Games r rather tricky ... the Power of the King n Potential of the Pawns r tremendous but I give up too easily sometimes ..  hv yet to seriously study them, tho !

Oh ,u mean before Ng5 is played ... yeah, rite but it's usually blocked by Black's own Knight on f6 ( if that has been played in the Opening ) ! .. Tnx,Alex-F !

Btw,I juz used that on u in that Live Game yesterday ... proKnight98 (guess u forgot to stop me) .. hehehe

Smothered Mate! and second the Pin(A pinned piece is a paralzed piece).

.. Yeah, but I think the chances of a Smothered Mate happening is rather small as people normally do not smother/surround his King with  so many friendly pieces !

.. I think one of the worst kind of Pin wld be the Partial Pin on one's Queen to his own King by the opponent's Rook that is being defended by his other pieces = loss of Queen !!!

doesn't Be7 pen in your night on g8 too much though? The bishop doesn't really have anywhere to go from there (f6 is really passive, g5 is out because pawn c3 give white a tempo and a chance to develop, which only leaves h6, where it can be kicked by a pawn back to a less active square). I'm not sure h6 is much better, but what about something like Nf6 ... d5 ?

madpawn

My real problem is when I am playing a stronger graded opponent and the position is either even or I am a little better and they then proceed to make my life incredibly difficult. They either embark on a suicide attack that I have to calculate exactly or by fortifying their position and daring me to attack - while they prepare counters.

Apart from that I really hate the pawn skewer.

Quote : The knight won't be able to move to g5. h6 is possible, but it is a waste of tempo and a waiting move. Eventually, you might need to play h6, but Be7 develops a piece and defends while attacking, or as counter-attacking.

Yeah .. Tnx

.. guess I was thinking of a variation( Two Knights Defense) where Black has already played Nf6 (blocking Be7) and White can then play Ng5  ,thence Nf7 ( the Defining Move in Fried Liver Attack) ,eg :

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nxd5 6. Nxf7!. ...

( as I mentioned in Post # 11 above )

.. or where Black plays 4...Nf6 in ur sequence of moves shown in ur diagram here .

Kikyo_Sushi

Tnx jerry2468 for the Chess Diagram ... think that's the Two Knights Defense I was referring to in post #20 !
