i think fritz. it talks a lot.
Most human chess engine
At least up until five years ago or so, I would have said it was Hiarcs. That is still quite human, I think, but I don't know many of the newer engines that have emerged in the last few years; perhaps one of those is yet more human in its play.
(Edit: I ought to clarify that I took "human" to mean something like "when in relatively untactical positions, plays the sort of moves a strong human would make (rather than flinging its rook pawns forward at random, which is more like something Junior would do)".)

Yes, the general consensus as to the most human/strategically sound engine is Rybka, though kasparov thought Deeper Blue had some "stirrings of human like intelligence"

But maybe the key test is to find an engine that plays human like below top strength. It seems very hard for the engines to play humanlike and bad?

I think someone mentioned that Rebel was very human-like when not playing on full strength...like with some engines they are totally crushing you then just blunder a piece away...which is not a good human representation of the skill level they are set at.

I will check out Rebel. Your description of what I'm talking about is perfect. When I say more human, I mean more mistakes, but blundering a piece away after you are getting crushed is not very human. I bet there would be a good market for someone to create an engine under 2000 or so that made more "human" mistakes.
Does anyone have an opinion about what they think is the most "human" chess engine?
