There are a lot of topics about who is your favourite grandmaster, what is your favourite game, what is your favourite chess book, what kind of pieces you like, what is your favourite board type and so on. I wanted to ask who do you guys consider to be the most influential/inspirational people on you as a chess player? It can be anyone from your parents to your cousin, your high school coach or maybe someone who authored your favourite chess book. It can be a chess master too, of course, if you think you have learned a lot from going through their games.
I'm going to start with mine:
1. IM John Bartholomew
As a 25 year old who somehow managed to ignite a spark for chess, I quickly stumbled upon John Bartholomews chess channel on YouTube. I didn't really play chess as a kid, nor did I know anyone who did. So I don't have any stories about how my father would've taught me how to move the pieces when I was 7. So I did what people nowadays do - and watched a YouTube tutorial. I think John Bartholomews "Chess Fundamentals" video series was one of the first ones that made me understand chess a bit better as a player.
2. NM Jerry / ChessNetwork
Same thing as with John Bartholomew. I've watched hundreds of ChessNetwork videos from live tournament coverage to grandmaster game analysis and tutorials. They are all great and I will always check any new videos. Especially the "from beginner to grandmaster" series helped me a lot!
3. GM Yasser Seirawan
There are a lot of interesting personalities within chess grandmasters from what I've gathered watching documentaries and reading books and articles. Yasser is not only a great teacher (I recommend all of his St.Louis Chess club lectures) but also a person whose kindness and warmth shines through from his persona!
4. GM Alexander Panchenko
His book "Mastering Chess Middlegames" is the chess book that I've spent most time with, and actually studied from cover to cover. It was one of the first books I got (I just liked the cover and the introduction) and despite the topics being way above my level, I feel like I picked a lot of new ideas and improved my understanding of the game considerably.
5. IM Joshua Waitzkin
Joshua Waitzkin has an absolutely amazing chess academy on Chessmaster: Grandmaster Edition, where he goes through various games (both his own and other masters). The Josh Waitzkin academy has some of the most deeply and well analyzed grandmaster games I've found from any book, video or a game.
Bonus. GM Mikhail Tal
I mean who doesn't want to play like the magician Mikhail Tal? Wild sacrifices, creative ideas, cunning plans and splendid attacks from start to finish. He is the one player whose games I have gone through the most, and the one player whose games make me truly appreciate the beauty of chess. Most entertaining chess player to ever play this game.
