Most moves in an officially recorded Correspondence Chess Game

Dear All

Gary Maguire and I just finished our British Correspondence Chess game (2023-2025)

It lasted 136 moves

Out of curiosity, does anyone know of a longer Correspondence Chess game?

If you do happen play through the game, because the game was obviously going nowhere using Stockfish 17, Gary and I made a gentleman's agreement to stop using a computer after move 80, as you can see from the errors that I made

That being said it was, after move 80, the most enjoyable game

Best regards

Terry

You cannot use stockfish 17! That is cheating.

That's the problem we are now trying to solve

In ICCF correspondence chess Computer is obligatory

Try asking Google Gemini the question and it will provide an excellent analysis

I don't ask Gemini, it's stupid. I use ChatGPT?

I believe the record longest game in correspondence chess was in the 1940s set at 144 moves cannot recall the players would have to search my dusty archives in those days tgey were sending moves with postage stamps 🤔

The longest correspondence chess game on record, in terms of duration, is the one played by Dr. Reinhart Straszacker and Dr. Hendrik Roelof van Huyssteen, which lasted 53 yearsaccording to Guinness World RecordsThe game concluded in 1999 with Straszacker's death. They played 112 games in total, with each player winning half. This game is recognized for its incredibly long duration due to the nature of correspondence chess, where players take a long time to make moves, rather than the number of moves in the game.

While the game between Straszacker and van Huyssteen holds the record for duration, the longest recorded chess game by moves was between Ivan Nikolić and Goran Arsović in 1989, with 269 moves. This game also ended in a draw.

A key difference is that the Straszacker/van Huyssteen game was correspondence chess, where moves are sent via mail or other remote methods, allowing for extremely long periods between moves. The Nikolić/Arsović game was a tournament game, played over the board with a time limit for each player.

Sorry, but 136 moves is nothing! Check out the ICCF 33rd world championship final game that just finished between Panitevsky and Haugen: 164 moves!
