And what variations of those are most popular. Now i know Sicilian would still be one of them, but not sure which variations and what the others ones are.

I'm starting to like the Marshall Gambit ... which is a very fun variation in the Ruy Lopez ... I think you'll find it to be pretty common.

The Kings Gambit has fallen out of favour but is still plenty playable.

The Scotch has made a comeback, you may want to read up on the basics.

And of course you have the Sicilian, which is the most common... Take a look at the Svesh and the Najdorf ... while you're at it you may want to peruse some of the latest 'refuations' of the Dragon... it used to be popular :).

Against 1. e4 the two most popular defenses are probably the Sicilian and the Ruy Lopez.

The Sicilian is probably the weapon of choice of most grandmasters, but as littleman and ih8sens have pointed out, it has so many variations. And, "Nobody becomes a great player without playing some great Ruys."

The Sicilian open variation 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 is probably the most common. From Black's perspective, I see the Najdorf a lot (characterized by a6 from Black).

The Morphy Defense and Berlin Defense I see a lot when I play the Ruy Lopez.

Against 1. d4 the most popular nowadays are probably the Semi-Slav and Nimzo-Indian. There are other defenses to d4 that are rock solid, but I think these are the ones that players are choosing. And of course, these have many variations as well.

e4 and d4 give White the best winning percentages by far, so these classics will never go out of style. But two other White openings that are also very solid are the English Opening and the Reti Opening. Hope this helps littleman :)
