I love the stalemate rule as it gives me good reason to keep fighting on.

Had this one recently...

You really needed to promote?

that guy basically obliterated you before he put a stale mate lmao

If you have an overwhelming advantage and stumble into giving stalemate, that's just you blundering. Big blunders are always costly. Blame yourself, not the rules. If you are trying to win an ending that is theoretically drawn because proper defense will result in stalemate, it was your own ignorance of endgame theory that is to blame for your wasted efforts.

This is my favourite one so far...

Why not get rid of that pesky rook before finishing me off?  grin.png

THIS HAS SO MANY COMMENTS

lets be honest it is okay I take it yall ain't ever had a player who does the same thing but it is annoying when you lose a checkmate because of stalemate

With "stalemate" (as well as the dumb "en pessant" move) I'm convinced the community of people who made chess rules are petty people who don't understand the concept of fair play and sportsmanship. There is no other game in the world where losers are rewarded so frequently

Made_in_Shoreditch

The point of the game is to checkmate your opponent, failing that there is no winner just two losers who share the result. What other fair result could there be other than a draw?

If your suggesting the player with the material advantage is awarded the win when a game ends and neither player can move then how would that rule be applied when a game ends as a result of checkmate, neither player can move, but the player having been checkmated clearly had an overwhelming material advantage?

How is this NOT checkmate for black????

Which direction is the pawn going?

Not checkmate--white's king isn't in check. However, if it is black's move ....Rh1 or ...Qh1 or ....Qg2 or ....Qg3 are all checkmate. If white is on move, the only legal move is h4, and black again has multiple choices for checkmate.

cry about it

Well the white king isn't in check, so it couldn't be checkmate. It should be a game black won, but this position isn't checkmate. And if it's White's turn and we are looking at the board from blacks point of view - so the white pawn would be moving down the board, then white has no legal moves so it's stalemate. If we are looking at the board from whites pov and white is playing up the board then that pawn could move and it is neither checkmate nor stalemate, though it should be checkmate on blacks next move

AnxiousPetrosianFan

So I checked the game and yea white is playing down the board, so it is stalemate. Classic case

Stalemate is a situation in the game of chess where the player whose turn it is to move is not in check but has no legal move. The rules of chess provide that when stalemate occurs, the game ends as a draw.

The rule applies to both players so stop whining about it.

Stalemate and en passant are the two non-intuitive rules that have to be learned. Almost every other part of the game can be inferred. So beginners: Learn them! And experienced players: Explain them nicely!
