Moving Beyond Beginner

What steps should a beginner take to move to the next level? Are there any books that will benefit me? If so, were to start, e.g., an Opening, Stratergy, or Tatics book?

Lots of good books.  Coach Heisman loves a good instructive anthology.  Here's his book list:

And of course free Chess Mentor courses are a hard deal to turn down. They really are well done, although you'll need to review them a few times to be sure the lessons "stick".  Should keep you busy for a few weeks!
