i dont because i would get distracted by it
Music during chess?

I try to listen to music from my opponent's country - so that I can 'get into the mind set of my opponent'. When I'm playing South Americans, the maraccas nearly drive me crazy.

I've been doing the same thing, can handle the maraccas, its the sitar music when I play Indians that drives me bongos...and I like sitar music normally.

Many people bring iPods to long tournament games. Classical music seems to be the most common selection.
Are they allowed to listen to these while playing? Would it still be OK if they were listening to a 'talking chess book'?

METAL! METAL! METAL! It really gets my adrenaline going and I feel much more relaxed. I haven't played in any actual live tournaments yet because I am still in school and from what I have seen, most of the tournaments are just too far away from me to go to anyway. I hope to go to one soon just to see how well I could do.

My teacher once "recommended" that I no longer listen to music while I play. I think he ended up saying something like "well, I don't know any serious players who listen to music while they play"

Yes, I love to listen when it is not a serious game. When I do listen to the music though, it is usualy calming classical and opera. I play chess to relx from stress and the music adds to my relazation.

I find music in live tournament play to be horrible. It makes the time go by faster which is a horrible thing when you need time. It's obviously distracting and find myself trying to ignore it rather than enjoying it.
In casual chess do whatever you feel. Since time isn't a factor it's not important. when I do listen I like Catherine Wheel with chess.

If i am studying chess i dont listen to music, only very rarely perhaps. When i am playing online blitz i am probably listening to music and chatting (when i can) at the same time!
If i am at a chess club or tournament i hate any noise in the room.
I'm sure that this has probably been posted half a million times by now but I don't feel like trying to dig it up. How many people like to listen to music while they play and if so, what do you like to listen to? And if not, have you ever tried and why do you not like it?
