When I'm just screwing around in Live Chess it doesn't really make a difference, but when I'm playing seriously it's very distracting.
Music Helps???

Classical can be just as distracting. When I listen to Mendelssohn's Concerto in E Minor it's just as bad as listening to any rock music. If I'm listening to some of the more classical Bach it won't be distracting at all.

its usually considered impolite to listen to music in a tournament. people might think that you are listening to a chess podcast or something.

It seems to help me in bullet or blitz -- anything longer than 5 minutes though and I like silence better. The benefit of music to me is that it helps put me in a good mood and so raises my confidence in my moves (so I spend less time looking at them critically).
This is good for blitz, and very bad at a tournament!

Rap < Everything else
All rap isn't bad but there isn't any good rap on the radio anymore.
Yes, I was joshing a bit here; some can be appealing to the ear. You do have a point with today's music is not very great, unfortunately it don't just concern rap...

I like hearing music to just about every activity. Does music help my chess play? I doubt it.
(helps make chess less boring)

I agree with longlostdude, I like playing music while i'm screwing around on live chess but I can't say it's made me a better player.

Did your friends provide any objective, measurable proof here? I bet they didn't. Personally, I usually end up not hearing music at all if I start concentrating on something else, such as reading a book. Bobby Fischer is supposed to have listened to music...while studying chess, not playing.
Why don't you try playing online live chess with and without music, say for several wks each way and see what the results are? I don't think trying to listen to music with earbuds would go over very well in an OTB tnmt, since everyone else would probably automatically assume you were cheating.

You know what, I'll do that! :) I'll post a new topic when im done with the results! :D
I'm guessing it really depends on the person. For me, music has always helped me concentrate, but I can see why someone would find it distracting.
So i've been talking to some players i know and some think that music helps your mind flow better. They listen to everything from "Lil Wayne" and "Eminem" to "Mozart".
Whats your take on this? Do you think that listening to music during your game helps, or is it distracting?
