Hello everyone....I am going to participate in my first rated rapid tournament ever which is scheduled for 10th and 11th December.....I want to get some tips about how to prepare and play in the tournament. There will be 9 rounds and the time limit is 20 minutes per game with 10 sec increment for move 1!!!Thank you.....

I do a lot of tactics before tournaments, mate in 1's through 3's, pins, forks etc I strongly suggest doing these as it's how I win most of my games against lower rated players. Play what you always do but make sure you work on your opening repertoire before going into the tournament. And lastly make sure you get enough rest and eat something light before the tournament. Best of luck!

Cramming isn't going to help, you know what you knw, you're not going to do yourself any good burning brain cells studying for hours the week before the tournament.

Just relax and go in with the attitude that you are there to have a good time regardless of how you do and you'll be a lot happier.

Make sure you don't lose all your energy in your very first match. If you lose all your energy in your very first match then you are going to find it difficult to concentrate on your latter matches. The result will be defeat.

1) Listen to what Timmy said - practice tactics.

2) Don't play blitz/bullet.

3) Don't play games on your Cell phone; they have the same effect as blitz games.

Really???Playing games on cell phone on the cell phone has same effect as blitz games?I didn't know that....thanks for telling....Also...can I play daily chess games...would they help me??

BlackLionOrangutnKid

Yep, those little quick games on your cell will most likely hurt you...I found out the bad way.  They  instill bad habits and then in real play OTB, you'll do those same bad habits.  Daily chess games of at least 30 mins are good.  Just don't play more than 3 a day, because you may burn out.  Again, I found out the bad way.  I was playing 8 games a day (30 min LIVE games) and soon my rating dropped 100 pts because of overload and burn out.   Might lay off completely of actual games the day before your tourney.

I won't play 8 games a day as well....2 is enough for me as I wear spectacles

A few tips here that may help:

1. DON'T focus on opening preparation. Opening preparation is not extremely important at lower levels. Maybe pick 1 or 2 lines to prepare. Ruy lopez for white and sicilian defense for black.

2. Instead, DO focus on endgame preparation. Maybe you can get 1 or 2 endgame books to read. My top recommendation is Complete Endgame Course by Silman. Easy to read and understand for beginners like me.

3. Play lots of tactics puzzles. Sites like ChessTempo and Chess24 allows you to access tons of puzzles. DON'T hurry on to the next puzzle if you failed one. Relook at the puzzle carefully and try to find the correct move. Use the analysis board to find out how your wrong move can be countered or how the correct move is much stronger. Once you have played enough puzzles, your pattern recognition should be stronger and you can apply it in the real game.

4. Perhaps limit yourself to 1 game per day with the same time controls to get accustomed. It will be good if you can play it with someone over the real board. Try to analyse your game thoroughly after it has ended.

5. Stay healthy. Remember to exercise. A healthy body will have a nimble mind. Drink lots of water and sleep early. You don't want to tire yourself out when the tournament starts.

All the best for your tournament! :)
