My parents think i have a chess addiction and want me to quit chess, is that true?

Unfortunately, chess is a pointless game that is similar to a video game, not much value. Your parents are probably correct in their evaluation.

no chess is a good hobby it exercises your brain much like math

Maybe compromise with them a bit and spend a little less time on the chess and take up something else as well they might look upon favorably and that you also enjoy. You look pretty young and development in other areas is important too. Exposing yourself to other stuff. Social development. You don’t even have to do a lot of compromising. Maybe just join a sport that you could spend a few hours a week doing. You could probably even spend the same amount of time on chess. They probably just don’t want to see you locked into doing one thing.

At the same time though, I don’t want to discourage your habits bc in order to get pretty good you do have to spend quite a lot of time on chess and start from a young age. And it sounds like you’ve been doing that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

hi. first, remember you are asking chess addicts happy.png about this. we also love chess. i really do too. i also am a parent, and i want the best for my kid and putting myself in your parents shoes for a sec, i imagine they want the best for you too and want a well rounded experience for you. 4-6 hours a day is a lot for any one activity. we do math at school, but not 6 hours. we do PE, but not 6 hours, so why not tell them you love it, and don't want to quit, but understand their concerns about addiction and neglecting other things like bike riding or playing outside. those things matter too. ask them if limiting chess to 2 hours a day or 3 hours would make them happy. if you yourself can't do it, can't cut it in half, then you don't need to ask us if it's addictive, you already know. if yo can cut in half then you're not addicted. chess is fun, its good for your mental agility and improves other aspects of your thinking but so do so many other things. keep it balanced, keep it in check wink.png stay well rounded. i bet that's all they want. talk to them about this. compromise. that's my advice. they care about you.

Are you saying you play it in your head? I kinda do that, but I'll just have openings running through my head, they sort of go through "phases". What did your parents do as kids? Did they play any sports? Games? Maybe try to relate to them.

Jordan2177

i can play a whole game in my head

AunTheKnight
Everyone can.

You started playing in December and you are that good at visualizing? That's crazy! That is an incredible trait to possess! I have decent calculation, but not that good. You could perhaps give them the fact that you are quite good at chess and have the ability to do something (visualize) much better than others can, show to them you have a future in the game.

Not counting someone getting Scholar's Mated, I believe he meant like a good 30-50 move game.

AunTheKnight
That’s what I mean as well.

I'm not sure that's a common skill, I might be able to do that?

Just for context, this is how the OP (who can apparently play entire games through in his head) actually plays:
