hey fellow chess fans,

as the title already says, my rapid rating went from 1929 to 2217 within a month, and i would like to know whether that's based on an actual improvement of my playing strength, or whether there is another explanation. needless to say: no, i didn't cheat.

i recently had a quite bad otb tournament - 2/7, and i only won those two games because my opponents didn't appear - so i'm a bit surprised that online i'm gaining so many elo points. especially since i struggled for quite a while to even reach 2000.

i somehow have the impression that in that last month, my opponents in the range from 2000 to 2200 played worse than my opponents in the range < 2000. can that sentiment be backed up with data somehow? did you perhaps experience a similar jump of your rating at some point?

cheers.

I've actually heard other users say something similar. I don't have an explanation for why, it's something like a phenomenon. Congratulations for kicking the rating door down, DnlgrGrgk. BTW, O-O, you've got an excellent username. Happy chess, 🙂♟️

I might be on your path I've gone from 1926 elo to 2003 in 4 days. I hope to reach 2100 sometime late January if not February.

Sometimes things just click for you, I guess. I was in the lower 800s for a while when I suddenly became unstoppable for a hot minute, blazed my way into the mid 900s and actually stayed there after that brief period where I was absolutely on fire came to an end. It happened again shortly after I finally reached the quad digits, taking me up to almost 1100, but since then I've been slow to move up as usual.
