January 1995, Hikaru is 7 years old and plays in his first tournament against other scholastic players. His first game is a loss, to Derck Brand (who, sadly, did not pursue a career in chess and currently has a 682 rating).
Overall, Hikaru went 3-3, obtaining an unremarkable initial rating of 684. Good for a 7 year old, but certainly did not indicate that the kid would, 20 years later, be a world class player.
