Need an endgame knowledgeable person for help with "Active King" Drill

I have played through this drill several times and it is beyond my limited ability. I win sometimes, but not consistently, and am not able to explain the reason for each move. 
 
Can someone please explain the how to decide where even the first and second move should be? Perhaps I can get it from there.

It helps to know some basic patterns first, so that's what the first two diagrams are. Then I look at the position you linked.
