Im playing in a tournament this weekend and I'm currently rated 1786 USCF. Im in need of some inspiration, tips, and tricks from my fellow Chess.com brothers.

An affirmation that helped my motivation was saying to myself before a tournament: "My intention is to play the best possible chess that i can play."

Use your time wisely, no hasty moves!

Be willing to take calculated risks when needed.

Stay calm!

Study the games of your oponents?

This applies only for top-level master matches, not amateur club level tournaments.

Also, try and act like someone, who has learned a lot, in the last year, or two.

Some basic repertoir study won't hurt, I do not like it when my oponent gets an opening he knows but I don't.

This wasn't really the question...

But for inspiration sometimes you can play over old GM games. For example maybe famous games from world championship matches.

When you see a new opening, attack, maneuver or just any idea that interests you, try to keep it in mind for your next game.

Sometimes it's fun to play an opening you haven't really studied at all, you just saw a few interesting GM games that used it.

Having fun with it, and learning, are the two "secret" ingredients to improvement.
