Begin by learning the basic checkmates (King + Queen vs. King, King + Rook vs. King, King + 2Bishops vs. King, and King + Bishop + Knight vs. King). Learning the corraling of the enemy King with your King and Piece(s) into a corner and then delivering mate will teach you both about the power of the pieces and how they work together. You should practice these mates until you can do them in your sleep.
Next you should practice the King + pawn vs. King endgame. It will teach you about a concept called the "opposition" and the correct method for queening the pawn. You practice this endgame until you can do it in your sleep. When you have succesfully queened the pawn, go ahead and promote it to say a Rook and practice mating the opponent's King from that position. It cements the idea in your head of converting a winning advantage in the endgame into a won endgame.
The basic idea is that the endgame is a much simpler problem(s) to study and analyze. The opening is the most complicated problem(s) to study and analyze.
