The ratings are just guesstimates. When the bots were over in Live, their ratings rose and fell depending on their performance, just like a human player. Not that they aren't fun to play against, but don't take their ratings at all seriously.
new chess computer ratings accuracy.
The computer opponent ratings baffle me. I beat the engine level 15 (rated 1900) after two attempts and it wasn't too difficult. It is true that the pressure isn't the same as playing a high rated person but I'm just an average 1400 rapid player so from my experience of playing online I would say the engine level 15 which is supposedly rated 1900 is more like 1350...
I have played 3 of the new computer personalities so far and have scored 3-0. 2 were rated 1600 and 1 was rated 1900. This is very strange given my rating is usually 1650-1700 in rapid so I don't think these are accurate ratings. not just did I beat them but they were very smooth games where I got a advantage through a fairly simple tactic early on and the computer did not play very complicated like they usually seem to. I have 3 ideas. First maybe the ratings really are just wrong. Second maybe I'm just much better playing with no time control and no rating points on the line. Third maybe since I can see the computer evaluation live during the game it gives me more confidence and helps me spot the computers blunders. What do you guys think? Even if the ratings are off I still love the new computer personalities and am happy chess.com has created this new training tool.
