New chess engine for chess.com?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe chess.com has now added stockfish 14 to replace the much weaker stockfish 12 in the analysis. I have only 1 question, it seems the lines are a lot stronger than the sidebar and the thing that tells you if it was the 'best' or a 'inaccuracy', am I correct? And if so, why is this? Would it be too laggy on bad devices with a strong stockfish 14 for the lines, the sidebar and the thing that tell you how good the move you played was?

The much weaker Stockfish 12??

I don't think there's a human who can beat Stockfish 12.

It's like saying you'd lose a footrace now to a 2022 car with a V8 engine.  As long as it runs, I'm pretty sure you'd lose to a 50 year old Ford Pinto, too.  wink.png

no one can beat stockfish 12

I'm not saying anyone can beat stockfish 12, I am just saying it is not as good as stockfish 14. While a human can not beat an engine, if a human were to learn from what an engine was saying it would be nice to know that the engine is not giving false information (or at least false considering the new information we have with a newer, and stronger engine). This is especially useful for when studying openings I believe

It takes more computing power to run a higher level engine, why would they waste resources on needless complexity when a lower level one works just fine

You aren't wrong, but I still believe it is good to have something that is more likely to be correct about what is the best move. This way you can learn from your mistakes without learning something that may be inaccurate with the new technology

Also I believe somebody tested stockfish 14 vs stockfish 12 and the score was Stockfish 14 : 6.5 and Stockfish 12 : 3.5. Considering engines are supposed to play perfect moves Stockfish 14 is a lot stronger

They don’t need engine level chess corrections they just need corrections at a high enough levels that they benefit any member among the site

I guess it is a matter of opinion. From chess.com's point of view some people may want to analyse with the strongest engine available, so they may analyse on another app/website if chess.com doesn't have the newest and most powerful engine. Whereas it is much less likely somebody will want to analyse with a weaker engine and go to another app/website to do it. This may be the reason why chess.com added it but I don't know, just a guess

ThatGuyNamedJeff

I myself, like to have the strongest engine available on this site. I know other members may care less though, or may even not want a stronger one. Also sorry if it sounded like I was referring to Stockfish 12 as 'weak', I was just trying to say it was weaker than the new Stockfish 14

I agree with Mimic. We're not GMs.

You are aware right chess.com is a commercial site? There is no way they are using the latest version of a free engine. This is why lichess has the latest version since it takes no profit. Ironic uh? You spend real cash only to get no best analysis

Oh, I thought stockfish 14 was the newest Stockfish version. My bad

I still prefer to have the newest version. But yes, I do understand it isn't necessary

Stockfish developers have their own policy whether any commercial site is allowed to use second or previous version of the engine. If chess.com still uses 12nd version then there must be a reason. Why doesn't this site upgrade it into 13rd version. Certainly its not allowed to use the latest/newest version, beta or not

But I have seen that it is using Stockfish 14, is it a glitch/error?
