New ECF grades.

lol You mean everything is bigger in the rest of the world? ECF grades may pre-date the other grading systems but it seems a bit silly to have a number that nobody (outside England) will be able to appreciate without a formula
See Pints for another outdated English concept.
Seriously though, without the ECF grading system we would have to rename the 150 Attack something like the 1800 attack.. not as cool sounding is it?

i don't know. Would you rather fight 100 bears or 1000? :)
^ I don't think it would change the outcome either way, so I'd pick the 1,000 bears. It's cooler to be mauled to death by one thousand bears than a mere one hundred.

How is the pint outdated? The alcohol unit system is based around the pint and to get a pint you need some crazy combination of litres.

Believe me, adults hate playing kids (U18 is all the same, regardless of age), they're blood-thirsty little monsters who are also under-rated.
This should be an outdated concept since last year. Juniors are now treated as Ungraded players each year, i.e. their new ratings get calculated BEFORE adult ratings are calculated; this way, the junior grades tend to be much more representative.

You guys bail on inches leaving us holding the bag and then you keep pints when beer should clearly be consumed in 1 liter steins. geez..

Also, the official ECF rating conversion formulas look off to me. It seems like they will, in general, give you a overrated FIDE or USCF rating by a good 100 points at least. So take that into account with any conversion you do. Also, the lower your rating the higher the deviation seems to be. It's only really high ratings that seem to convert nicely.
Are you sure? The ECF grades of the 3 people in my club with FIDE ratings convert just about right. They're rated at 162, 173 and 175. Are you just talking about players lower than that?
EDIT: I did a search for some more players with FIDE ratings and on average their conversions also matched their actual FIDE ratings pretty well.
Mines now 115 (hopefully), from which is a 24 point increase from what i had before: 83. i also have a tournament at the end of August which could seriously alter my grade (the main reason why my grades jumped so much is because i beat a 155, other than that my results have been wuite average). Oh yeah, and sorry about my account saying BCF:120, it's just i prefer saying 120 to my opponents than 115.lol
Part of ther problem is historical:
BCF/ECF gradings (started 1954) predate FIDE and USCF ratings (started 1970's).
p.s. Also, three digits is plenty to differentiate between rank beginner (say 50 ECF), strong club player (say 160 ECF) and Grandmaster (say 240 ECF). The extra digit seems superfluous. Maybe, it's just that everything is bigger in the US?
lol You mean everything is bigger in the rest of the world? ECF grades may pre-date the other grading systems but it seems a bit silly to have a number that nobody (outside England) will be able to appreciate without a formula, and even then it's hard to get a reliable figure due to the three digits. I have played some people on here who are (in my view) no where near as strong as they claim their Fide grade would be if converted from their ECF grade.
