Hey everyone. I am new to playing serious chess. I have been looking around this site as well as some books, trying to find some good beginner strategies, but it all seems to overwhelming. So i was wondering where i should start? What books, strategies, or other websites should i take a look at?!

 Thanks for helping out

there are other chess websites?? i didn't know... ;)

don't get overwhelmed. take it slow. work on TACTICS. make friends on chess.com, and post in your blog about your progress! :)

www.chesstactics.org, "Play Winning Chess" book by Yasser Seirwan (sp?).  A combination of those 2 will have you improving greatly in no time!

I would say a bit of theory on a few openings also helps, I think since I started checking the theory I`ve improved (and keep improving) a lot. And I started something like a week ago, and I haven`t been doing it all day.

I'd advise you to go very slow first learn the basic checkmates until you can do them all in your sleep before moving on to anything else!

King and Queen vs King

Two Bishops and King vs King

Rook and King and vs King

Two Rooks and King vs King

Bishop and Knight and King vs King

This is a great sight to practice them against a Computer

"Logical Chess: Move by Move" by Irving Chernev is recognised as a great book to introduce how to play a real game of chess (after you have already learned how the pieces move).

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I am starting to study some books, and i keep looking at a lot of different opening moves on this site, but i keep coming across different openings that i don’t understand (Such as Kings Indian Attack, Queens/Kings Gambit ect. . .)! So is there any page that has a good definition of different opening strategies.

 Thanks for any help

Explore, explore, explore this wonderful website.  There is more information on this website than anyone can take in.
