New International Chess Orgnisation to replace FIDE

For the past 30 years, the presidency of FIDE has been held by persons closely connected to the Kremlin. Former FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was also the President of a region within the Russian Federation and was considered close acquaintances with the likes of Muammar Gaddafi (former dictator of Libya now deceased) and Bashir Al-Assad (Syrian President and out right monster).

The current president of FIDE is Arkady Dvorkovich. I do not have the time to reference it now, but I thoroughly reccomend you check out the works of Pete Doggers who has written substantially on the topic. It is generally known and accepted that Dvorkovich used his position as chairman of Russia's FIFA (football) committee to bribe FIDE council members to vote for him as well as engaging in other activities to manipulate the voting process to insure his position. Amidst the allegations of cheating and corruption it should be recognised that Arkady Dvorkovich, president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is the former deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and one of the top 10 closest people to Vladamir Putin himself.

Immediately after Dvorkovich took the presidency, FIDE was used as a platform to promote major Russian economic interests. The key partners were all major Russian businesses except for Chessable. Principally Gazprom (surprise surprise) as well as a major Russian mining company. Checking the FIDE partners program today one can see that the current partners have removed a number of major businesses, particularly those from the Energy and Resource sectors, but one can easily see that half of the companies still listed are of Russian interest (https://fide.com/partners) [side note: another one of them is for breast implants...].

Across its recent history, the voting process of FIDE has been widely denounced as a farce. FIDE is used as a mouthpiece to prop up and legitimise the Russian federation.

There is no room for politics in Chess. There is no justification for the use of our game to finance a pariah nation or terrorist group to murder innocent people.

It's about this that I write to you today. FIDE is lost to us. It is neither justifiable to continue supporting FIDE nor is FIDE capable of representing the world of Modern Chess.

I propose the founding of a new International Chess Organisation to oust the Kremlin's control of our game once and for all. By writing this post, I hope to "get the ball rolling" with regard to this matter and encourage you to organise yourselves to this end.

As much as I would like to, I would not be able to help make such an organisation as it is my intention to travel to, and provide humanitarian aid on, the Polish-Ukrainian Border within a matter of weeks. I leave it to you pressure the owners of Chess.com to cooperate with the founders of Lichess (two very decent and highly respectable Chess organisations I might add) to found a "New Beginning" for the World of Chess because this is the right thing to do.

Here are some suggestions of what a "New Chess Standard Organisation" could have:

  • Improved rating system (Glicko 2 or better).
  • Recognition and tournament facilitation of major Chess variants.
  • The production (and free distribution thereof) of a comprehensive and intuitive notational language to standardise all versions of Chess (and perhaps even including other popular classic board games such as Draughts, Go, Prometheus, Othello, Hnefatafl etc.)
  • A co-operative based model where all members are able to vote and not just a select committee of council representatives.
  • A constitutional article that does not allow for corporate sponserships/advertisements to allow the orgnisation to remain independent (like Wikipedia).

That's about all I have to say. It's been nearly a year since I invented the "standard" version of 8 Player Chess and that game, like regular Chess is free for everybody without attribution.

There is no such thing as an "official" Chess Association. Some respected organisation may give you a fancy title recognising you as a Master of the game, but they were never an authority to begin with - who's to say that a "Master" gets more fun out of the beautiful game than you do? Chess is the common heritage of all humanity. There has never been and will never be a true authority of Chess - by its nature, no one can ever own it. Chess is as much yours as it is anybody elses. Chess belongs to everyone.

Thanks for informing about FIDE's cooperation with Putin. That's very good to know. Creating a new international chess federation is a great idea. I don't like the criteria you gave though. Why is recognizing chess variants a good idea!? Also, it is ridiculous to question the chess titles. Like who are you to do that?

Agreed.

This makes sense but a new title system would have to be put into place which would be a major effort... by disbanding or boycotting FIDE all of the current titles (except NM) would no longer apply

So aside from this issue I like the idea

Because the Soviet Union created a support system for chess, making it accessible to everyone and financially stable for masters, they had more players, GMs and World Champion contenders that any other nation--by a wide margin. That legacy means there are still more chess players and GMs in Russia than anywhere else, and also a much larger support administration, so it should not be surprising that Russia still provides a disproportionate share of chess championship contenders, arbiters, coaches and executives to international chess.

It is true that some influential figures at top levels of FIDE are more interested in their personal status and paychecks, or the betterment of the national federations from which they came, than they are about the welfare and development of the chess community as a whole. That's an unfortunate fact of life. You can say the same thing about FIFA, FIBA, the International Olympic Committee, the World Trade Organization, the United Nations and any number of international organizations. Not to mention political parties, trade unions, corporate executives, even charities in individual nations.

If you truly believe that cobbling together a new international chess organization will cure this problem I'd be interested in obtaining some of what you've been smoking.

This is stupid. If Arkady is so under the influence of Putin, why has Russia been banned from events? Do you know the true reason why Russian companies are sponsoring fide? I don't either. For all we know western companies simply aren't interested.

PepetheMagnificent

Russian companies sponsor FIDE because chess is deeply ingrained in the culture there. It's not a part of Western culture, at least not to the extent that it has been for a very long time in Russia. They've already taken steps against them anyway
