I don't know whether it should be shortened or lengthened, and by how many moves and if extra conditions should be introduced, or that, as you suggest, the rule be abolished altogether. I only know it it quite dubious/debatable, with dozens upon dozens of examples in grandmaster practice of the action getting prematurely interrupted

A game of chess must be played to its END excepting repetition of position which is sometimes unavoidable. 50 move "rule" by the so-called federation must be eliminated.

There are certain positions in which mate cannot be given in 50 moves. So a better solution is to reduce the time increment to 5 seconds per move after the "50-moves limit". And there is nothing wrong in finding the mating pattern over the board especially for C class players. Nobody is born master after all.

I think it'd be interesting to add that chinese chess rule that the king's arn't allowed to 'see' each other i.e be directly opposite on an open file.

Of course this would completely destroy king and pawn endgames, which is why maybe it should only be on verticle lines (is it that way in xianqi??).
