New Starting Game and End Game Animations

Sort:

Wanted to know opinions on the new starting game and ending animations. Personally, I think they're rather annoying, slowing down the game, and also a bit annoying on the eyes as well with all those colorful frames thrown to your face when you want to play a game of chess.

I know this is complaining about little things, but I don't like when they try to "improve" a software that we use by introducing tiny changes that worsen it.

What do you guys think?

You can disable it in your settings.

PuigAdam

This should come disabled by default.

Generally speaking, new features are enabled by default otherwise no one would know about them.

I'm trying to find that setting, but I can't find it

Pokemonmaster95

where do you disable them?

It's very annoying. I was getting them about a week or so ago and then it stopped for a bit so I was hoping it had been quietly abandoned but no...

If you are on mobile and playing as white, the animation goes directly over your pawns and stops you making your opening moving for a couple of seconds! What kind of "feature" is that? The default setting is set to cost white time in a blitz game?!

How was this even approved? It adds nothing. Maybe there's a bored front end developer on the payroll who was looking for something to do...

GirlsPlayBetter

ever played Chess in the Park on discord, now THOSE are some annoying animations LOL

My thoughts exactly. I was playing some bullet, and it was seriously annoying.

Yeah, I don't really play bullet but I checked out a 1 minute, no increment game. It's basically 1 minute black vs 57 seconds white.

Why implement such a terrible feature "across the board" so to speak (!) which adds literally nothing. I could already see who I was playing...

I'd rather developer time was spent on fixing actual bugs - e.g. The material +- number seems to disappear during games for some reason now.

Can someone please say where the setting is to disable these animations?

I went to Settings > Board and pieces > Piece animations and selected "none" there. I don't know if that affects anything else, though. Would've been nice if we had been told exactly where it was instead of having to look for it ourselves, but well

Ootterr

It's on the 'play screen' settings and not in the actual site settings. (didn't know there was two different setting screens.)

it's called pre/post game board animations

Any chance you could explain exactly how to get to that?

I'm playing on mobile and all I can see is the cog in the top right corner - that just seems to show the usual profile options...

Thanks.

I play on desktop, but I did just open the app and I can't find setting on there. so my best advice would be to log in on a laptop or something and the setting should carry over to your phone

BillWerbeniuk

Thanks. Bizarrely I just logged on to my pc to see if I could see it but I can't, although the animations don't appear at the start of a game!

I don't actually use the app, just play in browser on my phone. But, given the ability to turn this off doesn't exist there, this basically means you're always disadvantaged playing as white if not on a PC with this setting visible...

The setting is not currently available. There was a bug related to another change and an unexpected interaction, so it was temporarily removed to fix the bug

Developers don't suddenly decide to make changes. There are projects and designers involved and devs implement changes that are planned.

I was being facetious although it hard to believe any round table was held without someone pointing out that this "feature" removes 2/3 seconds from White's clock...

Some animations can be more annoying than useful, especially if they slow down gameplay. It is important that these changes are customizable so that players can choose to turn them on and off as they wish, depending on their preferences.

Honestly I don't like them because they would kind of make you hype when you win and lose. Now it has downsides, like only downsides. When you (or at least I) play chess, we play a bunch of games not some games. Like 8-9 games (10 min rapid) per day at least. So if you lose then the losing scene will distract you and demotivate you a little too. But winning scene will motivate you right? Well yes but no....yesn't. Winning does not motivate you because you win but because now you have more chance of winning with a positive attitude that is carried by the last game. Meanwhile winning scene will ALSO distract you and make you "overexcited". Like it just happened to me rn when I won a match after left chess for some time today. Chess should have a balance of emotions. A negative emotion helps you take a lose (that's why sometimes losing a lot can irritate you especially if you have some goals.) and a positive emotion will let you feel better for the next game. So if anything overstimulates any of those feelings distracting your focus. Then it will have some negative effects on your game. Well that's what I think.
