Hi everyone.  Just joined the site yesterday.  Soooooo many questions.  Looking forward to learning and playing.  Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.  Have played chess very casually for several years and decided I would try to get better since I can't seem to beat "pea brain" in my basic chess cd!  Anyway, question 1 of several million is....Could someone explain or quide me to an explanation of the rating scale I keep hearing and reading about.  Thanks and look forward to getting my bowels beat out by the rest of you.

Check out http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/chess-rating-system

It is a stickied thread at the start of this forum.  It explains the rating system.  Welcome to chess.com.

I too joined in hopes of getting better back in April. Since then I've busied myself with the Mentor Lessons where I've gained quite a few study points. I played a turned based game and lost. This resulted in bringing me below 1200. I joined for the Mentor Lessons. The Video Lessons are also good. Much later on I will probably get back to turn based play. I should be able to lift my rating there in the long run, but for now I will stick to the lessons. They are quite a bit of fun.
