So, I'd guess religion would be a part of why it's not popular over there. Do they have regional variants or similar board games in Islamabad that might be much more popular - perhaps some form of "Pakistani chess?"

Its a little more complicated.  Muslim faith is based upon the Koran and guided by the Hadiths or sayings of the prophet.  Some of these Hadiths are controversial and their legitimacy questioned.  I did manage to find two Hadiths related to chess and it was viewed in an unfavourable light.  Would this necessarily stop young Pakistani Muslims from playing chess? I doubt it, although it may be a factor.

Could you post those hadiths here? The modern game of chess didn't even exist then, so he was probably referring to whatever they played then. Oh, and also, yes, I'm sure that it wouldn't stop people who just didn't really care from doing it, but if it was frowned upon, you might see vigilante or even legal "justice" being served to people who would dare to play it, which would, at the very least, discourage people from playing it openly. Just some thoughts.

One must relaise that there are tournaments in the Islamic world attended to by some very excellent Mulsim players.  The Dubai open by way of example.  Clearly for some Muslims the Hadiths present no problem.

Yes i will post them but I have no way of knowing if they are considered authentic or not.

Muslim 946 The Prophet said: "He who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine."

Hadith Malik 554:1725-7 The Prophet said that he who played chess disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.

We still have to take some things in to account, though. First, it's only a translation of meaning, so he might have been referring to a game that isn't the game we play. Second, chess, in those times, was very often played for money (gambling). He might have only been against chess because of that.

But, yes, you are right that some people must either find it okay or just not care, since they do have tournaments there (although, from what I understand, isn't Dubai also a huge tourist attraction? so it might be kind of like those huge, lavish, oil-sheik hotels in the UAE that just want to bring people to the country...)

Swap you our chess clubs for your climate.

To be honest, I'm not sure what's better 18°C or 38°C in the summer.

You seem fairly knowledgeable about these matters. Did you study it sometime?

No I used to live in Islamabad.  I was doing voluntary work there around 1999.  My wife is a Pakistani christian from Rawalpindi which is joined on to Islamabad.  Its really a beautiful place, the further North you go the more outstanding it becomes.  Its a great pity because war has torn the place apart :(

Hey robbie, you've gone from a war torn, divided deprived city to go to Islamabad...from Glasgow.

Yes I remember one guy coming to Sight hill ( a deprived area of Glasgow) who was doing a documentary on Asylum seekers and saying that it was worse than Beirut!

Do you know how hard it is to get a cheap chess set in Australia?

I saw a weighted plastic set that costed $60.
