You really can not equate improvement with fun. Some people find fun in winning (in this case, improvement is more important to them) and some people simply do not care. It does not mean that people who do not care will never improve...oh yes, they will (at their own pace)! In my case, I improve my game by teaching chess because I have to exercise what I teach. I find more fun teaching than playing it over-the-board. BEAT SOMEONE or BE BEATEN...oooh, it hurts just to think about it. I don't think I will ever have fun in chess if I did not teach it.
Not improving equals more fun?
I absolutely love learning about strategy. It's fascinating and requires far more thinking than tactics. Reading strategy books takes up a large amount of my chess time - next largest is keeping my tactics up to scratch on chesstempo, and then after that is chess mentor. The thing I do least is actually play games, and when I do I annotate each one. Improving is fun.
Thanks everyone for your input. I really appreciate it!
