Notating Illegal Moves

My son played in his first tourney yesterday and isn't quite to the point of notating. I was able to video two of the games from the upstairs gallery though. I'll notate them today, but one of them had his opponent make several moves while in check. Is there a standardized way to notate an illegal move similar to the ! and ? in annotations?

I think that a simple "illegal move" comment would suffice.

I don't think you can go back and protest the result, even if it is on tape.

Thanks. Not interested in protesting, just keeping a record for posterity.

I'm not aware of any special annotation for illegal moves. One thing to keep in mind is that some chess GUI programs won't allow illegal moves to be entered. Sometimes there will be a setting that can be changed regarding "check move legality" (or some similar phrasing). Disabling the setting would allow illegal moves to be made in the GUI.
