Of all this, I've only heard about the fog of war, so it was useful to read, thanks.
Chess Variants
Thank you for posting this. I got bored of playing regular chess and have been super frustrated by these variants. Like there’s literally no way to win. It’s so annoying but I’m glad I can sort of understand how it works now.
Hostage Chess – A Rescue-Objective Chess Variant (Updated Ruleset)
Hi everyone,
I’d like to share an updated version of a chess variant I’ve been developing, called Hostage Chess.
It keeps the standard board and almost all classical rules, but changes the primary objective of the game.
Core Concept
In Hostage Chess, the Queen is a hostage, not a combat unit.
You don’t win by checkmating.
You win by reuniting your King with your Queen.
What Stays the Same
Standard 8×8 board
Standard piece movements
Castling, en passant, promotion rules (with one exception)
Normal capture rules for all pieces except the Queen and Postie
Key Changes
1. Queen as a Hostage
At game start, Queens are swapped:
White Queen starts next to Black King
Black Queen starts next to White King
The Queen:
Cannot capture
Cannot be captured
Does not give or receive check
Does not move voluntarily
2. Pawn Promotion → Postie
Pawns promote only to a new unit called Postie
Postie:
Moves like a Queen
Cannot capture
Can be captured normally
Postie exists purely as a communication relay
3. Queen Movement (Postie Only)
The Queen may move only when she is in contact with a Postie.
If:
Queen and Postie are on the same rank/file/diagonal
Distance ≤ 2 squares
No piece between them
→ The Queen may move one square toward the Postie.
If no contact → the Queen remains immobile.
4. King’s Rescue Leap
The King normally moves as in standard chess (1 square), except for one special case:
When the King is on the opponent’s half of the board (the 4 farthest ranks),
if a single move of two squares would place the King adjacent to its Queen,
the King may immediately move those two squares and win the game instantly.
If this condition is not met, the King moves normally.
This represents a decisive, all-or-nothing rescue attempt.
Win / Loss Conditions
Major Win:
Your King becomes adjacent to your Queen (successful rescue).
Immediate Loss:
A King is checkmated while having direct visual contact with its Queen
(same rank/file/diagonal, ≤2 squares, unobstructed).
The Queen “witnesses” the death and refuses to move.
Minor Win:
If one King has fallen, the surviving side wins by escorting its Queen to its own home rank before the opponent.
Draw:
Both Kings are eliminated.
Design Intent
Hostage Chess is not about stronger pieces or faster tactics.
It focuses on:
positional sacrifice
escort and denial
King activity after traditional checkmate
objective-based strategy using chess language
The Queen becomes a goal, not a weapon.
Current Status
Ruleset stabilized ()
Designed for competitive play
No board or piece movement changes required
Looking for feedback, edge cases, and playtesting interest
Questions for the Community
Does the rescue objective feel intuitive?
Is the King’s Rescue Leap clear and fair?
Would this work better as live, rapid, or correspondence?
Thanks for reading.
I’m happy to clarify rules or post a short sample game if there’s interest.

Atomic, When Pieces capture [Except Pawns] They cause a explosion that destroys pieces, [Including Itself] in a 3x3 radius of the piece This means the king can't capture.
Chaturaji, This Variant is a 4 Player INDIAN version of chess with a custom position, In Chaturaji, you capture the king to Checkmate, so this means the player gets a check warning but if they don't notice or accidentaly move their king into a position that is still check, they move there but then the next time their opponent takes their turn they can simply capture that player's king and checkmate them instantly, turning their pieces into stone and skipping their turn, they are out of the game! Also Sailboats move the same as Rooks.
Givaway, lose all your pieces to win, if the opponent moves one of their pieces into a position where they can capture it, you MUST capture that piece.
