Notation during timed games

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on keeping good notation during timed games. I have never used notation and am practicing before my first ever tournament to try and get used to it. Is there a method, or any tips that would help me limit the amount of time I am using on the clock to notate? Or should I be getting fast enough at it that it doesn't really matter? Any tips or help guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you'll be using algebraic. Simply get real good at know what the squares are. If someone says f5 you should know where that square is. You shouldn't have to think about it. You just know. That should be true from either side of the board. I know the board you play on likely has the numbers and letters. But if you just know, it will be faster, AND it will be less likely to contain mistakes.
