This thread is some of the best humor. I mean the passion for the game is palpable.

But let’s be honest here, Magnus is the world champion, he won.

usually I dream about Carlsen's sisters, but whatever floats your boat I guess.

Magnus Carlsen risks his reputation by playing tournaments even though he is already the champion. He can play a dozen games blindfolded. He has a superhuman memory. He behaves like a kid sometimes but it's understandable. He has his own chess app called Play Magnus. He plays here in chess.com while listening to music and watching soccer simultaneously. He is the best in classical, rapid and blitz. Most of all, he'll strike back at you face-to-face "Wwwhat do you want me to do?!" if he thinks you are trying belittle him in front of the people! #MyChampion

We chose him as our role model.

We even forgave him when he got a girlfriend, even though that would have made any other player lose all support.

We watched many draws and didn't complain, because we enjoyed when Caissa made flesh punished the slightest endgame mistake.

But when the champion known for aiming the win even the most drawish of the endgames decided to offer a draw as soon as he could, in a better position, with way more time than the opponent, without even trying to play a few safe moves to see if Caruana messed up under time pressure; then the mask fell. Now we see the real Magnus. And we don't like what we see.

Neither, chess is a board game.

I would say:  Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid.

Like many others I thought Carlsen should have played on in game 12.  But I think many people are overreacting and making it into a bigger thing than it really is.

The bottom line is that Carlsen's strategy worked.  He won the match and that's the goal.

Just putting my opinion out there. I don't really follow a lot of professional chess, but I was a bit interested in the match. I was rooting for Caruana, but mostly because I almost always go against the reigning champion (it has something to do with the New England Patriots/Tom Brady/Bill Belicheck). Anyway, I still agree that it was completely fair, just read Sean_Cooper's post (#3) and other people's for the reasons.

Magnus has always cared the most about Magnus. Anyone or anything else is secondary. There are a lot of moral and altruistic people out there to idolize. Magnus is not one of them. As to game 12, he did what he and could care less about other people's reaction. He said so himself.

He was playing for the title. Who wouldn't feel betrayed?

This must come as a big disappointment, but a world championship match is not a survey.

people who never play anything other than that long game can claim.

If Caruna won any one of the previous 11 rounds, Carlsen wouldnt have had the option to go for a draw in the final round... I really dont get why many people got so upset by the draw offer. If they only played one round before moving to another format, it would be a bit more understandable that fans felt frustrated, but as Caruna and Carlsen had already given the fans their best in the previous 11 rounds, who are we to jugde Carlsens choice of taking the draw to move on to a format in which he had a higher likelihood of winning? To me, this sounds like judging a player who is ahead in pawns for exchanging queens or other officers at some critical point in the match, to improve his or her advantage. Carlsen won fair and square, and Caruna can challenge him again another time.

Magnus Carlsen was clearly the winner in a blitz showdown, therefore why on Earth would he risk continuing an exhausting game when he could easily win in the following matches. On top of that, the world championship should be decided by several time controls rather than solely classical.

“A day hasn't gone by without me dreaming about him.”

this pretty much invalidates any opinion or statement you have, and calls into question your mental health.

Magnus has been my hero for almost 7 years now. A day hasn't gone by without me dreaming about him. 4 years ago, I remember by brother telling my parents, "I want to just like Magnus Carlsen when I grow up!" Magnus has been an idol for many young up and coming chess players such as myself. Carlsen was supposed to be second coming of Bobby Fischer, the hero that chess needed.

Everything changed in game 12 of the world chess championship. This event was the most anticipated event of 2018. Chess fans and normal people alike all sat down on on November 9th 2018 to watch the championship. I sat down for hours watching the match, not missing a single minute. However, by game 12, my whole opinion of Magnus changed. The moment he offered a draw my heart dropped.

How could he have offered that draw? I was upset, furious, depressed, so many emotions were rushing threw my head. Then I realized, Magnus isn't out for the people. He wasn't playing chess for the entertainment for chess enthusiast. He was playing for the title. I felt betrayed. This is the man I have worshiped. This is the man that I've skipped lectures just so I can watch him play the royal sport. This is the man I've idolized for years.

I was ashamed to be a chess player. I spent hours upon hours studying chess so I can one day become world chess champion just like my hero. This has got to stop.

Magnus Carlsen's leadership poses a threat to the peace and safety to the chess world. His immoral reputation and misconduct are an embarrassment and threat to chess enthusiasts. This will not be tolerated by chess fans.

No body cares

I sincerely appreciate how you carefully dissected his arguments and ended the debate with your powerful reasoning. But I must add, for the record, that my body does care.

Well maybe we can re-phrase it. A lot of people don’t care.

And Magnus certainly doesn’t. He is champion for the next two years whether people like it or not.

If you don’t, then you don’t have to watch his games. Simple.
