According to Wikipedia - which we all know is an infallible source of information - the Sicilian word for the knight piece is scecchu. Sicilian is classified as a Romance language, but this word has nothing to do with either the Latin root eques or the common modern term, which is some variation on cavallo (Italian), cavalier (French), Romanian cal, etc. It is, however, closely related to the Serbian/Croatian skakač, Polish skoczek. What is up with that? Did some Serbo-Polish Croats immigrate to Sicily and play so much chess that they left an impression on the language?
