Very interesting; however, I question the veracity.

lol, what a story!

I'm reminded about some advice I'd heard that I didn't believe... still don't believe it. But it said if someone were to stick you up, and you don't assume the mannerisms of a victim, you can (or have a chance to) defuse the situation.

I read it in the paper. I has to be true.

Chicken_Monster

No, only the things you read on the Internet are true :)

Since I read it in a newspaper on the internet, it must really be true then.

I read in The New York Times paper about the internet article about the newspaper clipping. Then I saw everything on chess.com. I agree now that what you posted must be true.

If someone holds a gun to me I will challenge them to chess. Kiss my buh-bye.

No FEN and notation for the move that the robber made?  I feel cheated! grin.png

"Sydney Morphing Herald" May 12, 1947:

Louisville "Courier-Journal," Aug. 31, 1944
Juliette Compton Gels Final Decree Hollywood, Aug. 30 (U.R)
Former movie and Follies star Juliette Compton received a final divorce decree today from James Bartram, wealthy British industrialist, who, she charged, likes to dress in their maid's clothing and once talked a burglar into laying down his gun and playing a game of chess. Bartram replied, in one of Hollywood's craziest divorce trials a year, and a half ago, that she had barred him from her bedroom in obedience to a strange religion that demanded she abandon "physical contacts" for a "purely spiritual union." The decree provided $225 a month for herself and daughter, Mary Juliette, 16, and a $25,000 insurance policy.
