I think it depends on the lesson. I've been working on Silman's "Roots of Positional Understanding," which is a beast of a lesson with 300 positions to consider. With this lesson, the more hints you get, the more it takes away, so I usually take one hint at a time. Before I get to hints stage, I usually narrow down my choices to 2-3 answers and try to make educated guesses first. It takes away less points if I guess. However, I usually find that once I get to hints stage, they might as well just give me the answer. Either the hints are too obvious or they are way out in left field. The rating system on this is too easy. My score is about 2000 and there is no way my understanding of chess is that good. Is pretty easy to rack up the points.

I was wondering if it's better to just get a hint (or all 3 hints) or just go ahead and guess if I don't know it. How many points are deducted?
