I'll speak for both types of Football, the one here in the states and the one on the other side of the planet.

In the United States, there are actually quite a few football players with University degrees up to a Master's. Chess players thereby may be considered inherently smart, which may or may not truly be the case, where many sports players appear to be foolish or idiotic but may indeed be quite intelligent.

Anyway, I assume every single person is a complete idiot until proven otherwise.

Would you include Manti Te'o in your list of Pigskin Ph.D's?

(For those who don't remember, he was the one who had the online girlfriend, who was never born. Oops.)

Actually a lot of chess is played in prison, so i guess they are practicing inside to be smarter than the cops and hence not getting caught next time. LOL!

well we are talking about the intelligence of really strong chess players.

Chess players are no more intellegent than anyone with any other hobby or profession.

Chess masters could be considered smart, but people are almost always smart if they make it to the top of their field.

Chess; like many things in life is about practice and study.  I always find it funny when I end up playing someone who only knows how the pieces move and they compliment my intellegence after I mop the floor with them.  To me that would be like walking up to a concert pianist and saying "wow! you must be really smart!" or saying to a carpenter after they've just built a house and saying "wow! you must be really smart!".

I'm an engineering student, and I often get simliar sentiments about my major.  I really don't think being smart has anything to do with it though, I get through school because I practice, I play chess decently because I practice, I play guitar well because I practice.

but that only goes so far. learning is one thing, but its definetly true that 2 people dont learn the same way and 2 people with the same level of learning have different skills. so its obviously true that chess is a factor.

Psychologically intelligence is simply an ability to solve different problems. In IQ-tests you have to solve for example linguistic, mathematical and spatial problems. So if you only play chess, you don´t get generally very intelligent. Also social intelligence is very important in life.

TetsuoShima

i dont believe in social intelligence or whatever that is.

But when it comes to making money, im pretty sure that chess requires the same atributes to be a successful businessperson. I dont believe in any intelligence test or in any not clear measurement. But i believe that money is pretty good indicator. Because of the world competes for money.

With the absolute same skill you can make money on the stock market or several other business endeavers.

WalangAlam

I agree EQ is almost as important as IQ. I mean common just look at the trolls  in the forum threads and compare it with their ratings you could almost see the identical misgivings.

no social intelligence is not so important in life.  thats bull, only success is important. If you are successful you are social anyway everyone likes you. As the jewish say: If you have money you look good, you can dance and are funny.

but the iq test is very generic i consider chess skills must be closer related to what you need in life.

Don't strive to be smart, strive to be wise. If you don't understand this...think about it for awhile and it might come to you.

Although the ability to deceive seems a sign of ingenuity and power to be, yet demonstrates the intent to deceive without doubt malice or weakness.

Even small lights know how to dazzle us very effectively.

As I said, think about this for awhile and when you have the right answer you can count yourself WISE as far as this discussion is concerned.

i gain wisdom automatically by my failed attempts to be smart. dont try to be esoteric on me, thats why i only say moneyis the only measure. You cant talk you way out and you cant find some esoteric standards for your "interest group"

Assumes you're an idiot until you can prove otherwise, right back at ya! :)

Research has shown that Chess players are of normal intelligence but this grows as they play ie. chess develops one's intelligence.

Also proven is that chess players develop a high level of "chess intelligence" - not transferable to other walks of life

I have to agree. Many strong chess players I knew are mediocre outside chess. They cannot apply what they learned from chess like tactics and strategy in the real world. In general, being smart in chess does not assure being smart outside chess.

I would be surprised if there wasn't a strong correlation between IQ and chess ability.  Obviously someone with a high IQ who doesn't play chess will not beat an experienced player with a lower IQ, but I would expect that they would be capable of achieving a higher ability with the same training.

I liken it to the difference between hardware and software in computing.  IQ is your hardware, it is your inherent capability and limitation.  The software is how you have programmed your brain, whether you learned the game or not.  You could run Houdini on a crappy computer and it would still beat a poorer engine on better hardware, but it will not be able to compete with the same program running on superior hardware.

I totally agree with your here, it is very true and it seems so obvious i dont understand why people just seem to always overlook this great point. That absolutly sums it up.
