When exactly WAS checkers solved? I heard it was, but not when.
Once chess is solved, will we make these jokes about it?

His comment was about tic tac toe.
You're right there! I'll let my comment stay there awhile for my just embarrassment
I continue to claim that chess is already "essentially" solved. How so? Just make the moves that Rybka tells you to make, and you will win the game. Against anybody. Does this now make chess easy? Easier? What would be different if the game were 100% solved? Not much....
Just make the moves that Rybka tells you to make, and you will win the game. Against anybody.
Not against the next version of Rybka. Which makes it pretty clear that the current version is not telling you perfect moves to make. Even Rybka makes mistakes.
even if we think chess programms are good now I think we have only seen the start.
I think at the time rybka 20 will be out. we will have computers that can play perfect.
nobody will laugh at chess. but I guess it will limit the amount of opening used.
who would choose an opening variant that a computer says is losing. you would rather choose an opening the computer says is winning. maybe french defence will no longer be used if it turns out to be losing.
even if a human could still win with french defence as black why risk it.
I should add the only time we would make fun of chess is if perfect play from white side always end in win. It is the general idea right now that perfect play leads to a draw.
if the computer played e4 and evaluated the winning change for black 0% and for draw 0%.
who would want to play black?
No one, that's who. It's unlikely that that's going to happen, though, since chess is way , more complex than tic-tac-toe (which always ends in a draw with perfect play). What if they paired up the checkers computer with itself? What will happen then?

LOL is this real? I didn't know that people took the game so seriously. I mean, It's checkers...

The joke in the original post is about a game that is a draw with perfect play.

Just throwing this out there. Suppose you can choose A or B as possible moves. The computer says A, and you know that this means that with A you will have a winning strategy, and with B you will not. But the computer will not help you to find that winning strategy with A, which may turn out to be quite elusive, the proverbial needle in the hay stack. Whereas B, though not guaranteeing victory, still gives you a very good chance to win playing future moves that you are capable of seeing for yourself. I'd choose B.
Here is a funny picture and caption from the Onion:

Naturally, the picture is only humorous because tic-tac-toe is so simple in terms of game-theory depth that even children have no problem solving it. I think that this would save chess from being the butt of this sort of joke once it becomes solved. It seems to have saved checkers (another solved game) as well.
The Onion is indeed America's Finest News Source.
